A Fair Oaks front end crash occurred on March 13, 2019, that caused a major injury to one person. The accident happened at about 1:45 in the afternoon along Greenback Lane near the intersection of Hoffman Lane between a Toyota Corolla and Dodge truck, according to the California Highway Patrol report. The vehicles were left facing each other and blocked the center lane of traffic. Personnel with the Sacramento Fire Department arrived to medically assess those involved in the crash, where it was determined that one individual had suffered major injuries.
Front End Crash Details
An ambulance was called to the scene to transport that person to a nearby hospital. No information has been released yet on that person’s identity or further condition. A traffic advisory was issued to motorists to avoid Greenback between Fair Oaks Boulevard and Kenneth Avenue while the injured were attended to and the vehicles cleared from the accident site.
Causes of Head On Collisions
Front end crashes occur when two vehicles are going in different directions and collide with each other. Because the force is doubled when two moving vehicles collide in this way, even cars that are moving slowly can cause severe injuries upon impact. Almost all of the accidents that result in a head-on collision are caused by negligence. There are several reasons a front end crash can occur, including:
- Distracted driving
- Drunk driving
- Drugged driving
- Making an improper left turn
- Inclement weather
- Motor vehicle defects
- Road damage or lack of signs
Injuries in a Head on Crash
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, front end crashes account for only 2 percent of all traffic accidents. However, more than 10 percent of those accidents result in deaths. Injuries in a head-on collision may be more severe than other types of accidents, except for rollovers. Some of the injuries that can occur in a front end crash include:
- Traumatic brain injuries: Because of the velocity of both vehicles when they impact in a front end crash, traumatic brain injuries can occur. Seat belts are designed to withstand a certain maximum speed. Faster than that and they may fail, causing those in the front seat of a vehicle to be ejected or impact the windshield.
- Broken bones: Dashboard knee can occur as well as fractures of the arms or legs.
- Abdominal injuries: Injuries to the abdomen can include damage to organs or internal bleeding. Any of these injuries can require emergency surgery and can be life-threatening.
- Back and spinal cord injuries: Back injuries can include torn ligaments, muscles, herniated disks and fractures to vertebrae. Spinal cord injuries can result in loss of strength in the extremities or partial or complete paralysis.
