Airbag for Bike
The company Airbag for Bike recently announced that it is seeking a patent on full-body airbags that might save countless lives when it reaches the open market. Prior research has shown that motorcycle accidents are far deadlier than their passenger vehicle counterparts. There are more safety advances in passenger vehicles than motorcycles, including airbags. The invention from Airbag for Bike may make its way to the mainstream market soon. The company has released a digital animation of its innovative airbag design, stating that it might open the motorcycle market to those who were hesitant to ride one without advanced safety features.
How Do Full-Body Airbags Work?
One of the biggest reasons why motorcyclists are more likely to be seriously injured or killed in an accident is because of the lack of protection between the rider and the road. In a passenger vehicle, there are seatbelts, airbags, and a metal frame that protect occupants from the external environment. There is no such protection on a motorcycle. Airbag for Bike seeks to change all of that.
In the digital animation created by Airbag for Bike, the goal is to revolutionize the safety of motorcycles everywhere. The rider is secured to a seat using a belt. In the event of an accident, the seat detaches itself from the bike. When the seat is ejected, the airbag deploys. This will cushion the rider before an impact against a hard, stationary object (such as the pavement).
The system uses a series of motion sensors and gyroscope to detect changes in momentum. If there is a sudden deceleration or acceleration (in the case of an impact from behind), or if the system detects a loss of balance, the system is triggered. The airbag system is designed to eject and inflate in a short time, protecting the rider from the force of an impact.
An Improvement on an Existing Design
This is not the first airbag system for motorcycles to be designed. Other companies, such as Honda, have already developed an airbag system for motorcycles. However, the design from Airbag for Bike is the first of its kind. Other airbags only inflate a small, pillow-sized airbag in front of the rider. This would not do much to protect the rider during a serious motorcycle accident, let alone one that might lead to an ejection. According to Airbag for Bike, its design has the potential to save millions of lives and protect countless more from sustaining life-altering impacts, such as a traumatic brain injury.
Moving Forward
The design is still in the early phases. The company has filed a patent application to protect its design. The company will first need to complete an early prototype to test the design before bringing it to the open market. While the company still has a long way to go before the design is presented on the roads, it does provide hope for motorcyclists.
