Galt Man Arrested for DUI After Crash

Driver Arrested After DUI Crash

Two young men were driving together during the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 1, 2017. The two men were involved in a single-vehicle collision, where the driver of the vehicle was later arrested at the hospital on suspicion of driving under the influence.

What Happened?

A 21-year-old Galt man was driving his 2012 Honda CRV northbound near Big Aspen Grove at approximately 1:00 am. The vehicle was allegedly traveling about 40 miles per hour moments before entering the right shoulder and colliding with a tree.

Was Anybody Injured?

The man driving the Honda suffered moderate injuries in the accident and was transported to the Mark Twain Medical Center. The man was later detained for suspicion of driving under the influence. A 19-year-old male passenger in his vehicle, also from Galt, reportedly escaped injuries in the collision.

What Caused the Crash?

An exact cause of the crash has not yet been released by officials. A Traffic Collision Report usually takes up to two weeks to be processed by authorities. However, investigators reported that the man’s vehicle drove into the right shoulder after failing to negotiate a slight left curve, resulting in a single-vehicle collision with a tree. Police suspect that drunk driving may have played a role in the crash, which prompted the arrest of the young man.

Drunk Driving Accident Statistics

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 10,265 victims passed away in accidents involving alcohol in 2015. This number accounted for nearly one-third of all traffic-related fatalities in the United States. About 1.1 million motorists were detained in 2015 for driving under the influence of alcohol or substance.

Motorists should avoid drinking and driving for obvious reasons including impaired perception, judgment, and coordination. These factors can heavily affect a motorist’s driving ability, increasing the risk of accident and/or injury to not only themselves but also to their vehicle occupants and others on the roadway.
