Graco Car Seats Recalled
I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Products Liability Lawyer. A recall has been announced for particular model numbers of the Graco My Ride 65 convertible car seats manufactured between May 20, 2014, and August 1, 2014. The recall will affect around 25,000 defective car seats due to faulty harness webbing.
Models Affected by the Recall
The affected models are as follows: 1794334, 1813015, 1813074, 1853478, 1871689, 1872691, 1877535, and 1908152. A tag on these car seats will show a 2014/06 code attached to the recalled seats. Graco will notify the owners of the convertible car seats. Replacement harnesses will be provided to customers for free by dealers. July 17, 2017, is the date scheduled to begin the recall.
Why the Current Harness Could Be Dangerous
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the harnesses on these car seats do not conform to Safety Standard 213 of federal standards required for restraint systems for children. Testing conducted by the agency showed that the webbing used in the defective car seats may increase the risk of injury because they might not restrain a child adequately. According to the company, one batch of webbing was the problem. Those with these seats can call Graco on their customer service line at 1-888-327-4236 or TTY at 1-800-424-9153, and they will send out a replacement kit. They also offer a replacement form that is located on their website.
Product Liability Law
When people purchase products, they expect them to be safe. Product liability arises when a product causes injury. This may be due to a defect in design or manufacturing, problems with the materials used, or errors along the manufacturing and distribution chain. This includes products purchased in a store, such as food products, an automobile with defective parts, defective tools such as chainsaws, and products commonly used in homes, such as a water heater or dishwasher. Products liability also extends to medicines and medical devices such as defective knee or hip replacements.
Steps a Company Can Take to Alert Consumers
Product liability lawsuits can occur when a company knows about a defect and fails to warn owners. Consumers must know about the warning. In the case of the recalled Graco car seats, the company is warning owners of the car seats through the dealers that the webbing is defective and providing replacement webbing. The company has also provided identifying numbers for the car seats. By doing this, Graco uses the ID tags to avoid missing a customer or someone who bought the car seat second-hand. Parents should be alert to recalls and check often to ensure an item they use is not on the list.
