Head Injury in Highway 50 Off-Ramp Accident

I am Ed Smith, a car accident lawyer in Sacramento. A single-car crash occurred in the early hours on April 23, 2018, on U.S. 50 in Sacramento when a driver lost control of his vehicle. An ambulance was called to attend to the man, who was reported as having suffered a head injury as a result of the collision.

Accident Details

The crash occurred at 5:26 in the morning on the highway’s 5th Street off-ramp when the driver lost control of his Toyota Corolla. It was reported that the vehicle struck a guardrail on the right-hand side, went into some barrels and then bounced into the wall. The car sustained significant damage to the front end from the collision, according to a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

One Person Injured in the Crash

Although the man was reported to have a head injury, he was able to get out of his vehicle without assistance. Emergency medical care was called to the crash scene to tend to the man. It is unknown whether or not he was transported to a hospital for further treatment. One lane on the off-ramp remained blocked for around 30 minutes, while authorities investigated the accident scene.

The Extent of Head Injuries Often Not Apparent

In many cases,  symptoms of a head injury are delayed. Initially, the individual may have no symptoms or a mild headache. Within hours to days, the headache may worsen and be accompanied by nausea and vomiting along with cognitive difficulty. In older individuals, a minor head injury can lead to a subdural hematoma, which is a collection of blood between one of the protective layers of the brain and the brain’s surface. The blood is usually removed surgically, however, in some cases it can be allowed to resorb.

Causes of Single Vehicle Accidents

Many, but not all, single vehicle accidents are caused by driver error. This can be due to distracted driving, speeding, driving while intoxicated or fatigue, among other reasons. However, not all accidents involving one vehicle are the fault of the driver. In the following instances, a driver may be able to obtain fair compensation for injuries suffered in a one-vehicle crash.

  • Design or manufacturer defect: These kinds of problems with a vehicle are common as shown by the frequency of recalls. For example, the Takata airbag has been shown to cause numerous accidents with injuries and deaths. Another area that can be attributed to a defect is in brakes and steering wheels. Ford recently recalled different models of the Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKT because the steering wheels could come loose or even come off while driving.
  • Poor road maintenance or design: Government entities such as the state, county or city are responsible for the upkeep and design of roads. When design errors are made such as curves that are too sharp or lack of signage, it can result in an accident. Maintenance is also an issue because potholes, broken pavement and other defects can cause a vehicle to crash.
  • Other drivers: Just because a single vehicle is in an accident doesn’t mean that another driver wasn’t responsible for the crash. Road rage and other types of aggressive driving such as speeding or veering into another vehicle’s lane can cause a car to crash. This is particularly true if the other driver is intoxicated and causes another driver to try to take evasive action to avoid an accident.
