What You Should Know About Insurance Companies and Car Accidents

A motor vehicle crash may be an overwhelming and stressful experience. What is most unfortunate is that some of these accidents may result in traumatic, life-changing injuries. When dealing with lost income and mounting medical expenses while recovering from accident-related injuries, the financial hardship can be challenging for everyone. Fortunately, you do not have to go about this alone. An experienced Merced car accident lawyer is there to help you and your family anytime.

An injury lawyer understands that a car accident can turn your life upside down. The most important thing to focus on during this challenging time is to focus on recovering, not dealing with difficult insurance companies. An attorney is there to handle all aspects of your case to ensure you are fairly compensated for your injuries and losses incurred.

You should retain an attorney as soon as possible after a traffic collision. While you may be tempted to handle your case without legal assistance, the insurance company representing the at-fault party will have their own team of claims adjusters, investigators, and defense counsel working against you to pay as little as possible on your claim. By retaining the best personal injury lawyer in your area, you will be working with a law firm that has the experience, skills, and resources necessary for proving your case. How UM and UIM Coverage Works in an Auto Accident

Under California law, drivers are required to carry liability insurance. This includes $15,000 in bodily injury coverage per individual, $30,000 per accident, and $5,000 in property damage liability coverage. Some motor vehicle collisions have the potential to result in damages that exceed state minimum coverage limits and in other situations, they may be caused by drivers with little to no insurance coverage. That is why it is essential to purchase higher uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage (UM and UIM) limits as part of your insurance policy.

UM and UIM coverage generally come into play in a personal injury case when damages exceed the other party’s insurance policy limits or when they do not carry liability coverage at all. UM coverage may also be used in cases involving hit and run drivers when they cannot be tracked down. Keep in mind that UM coverage for hit and run accidents may vary based upon the language of the insurance contract.

However, first-party insurance claims can be challenging to handle. The reason being is that insurance companies will attempt to settle cases for less than personal injury damages incurred. That is why it is essential to work with an attorney after a car accident resulting in serious injury and damages. An attorney will ensure all past and future medical expenses, lost income, loss of future earnings, and other losses are considered to obtain full and fair compensation on your behalf.
