Interstate 5 Head-On Fatality Crash Kills One in Wrong Way Collision
A head-on fatality crash occurred at Mount Shasta south of Yreka on October 12, blocking southbound Interstate 5. The collision happened on southbound Interstate 5 at North Mount Shasta Boulevard around 4:28 p.m. because of a driver traveling north in the southbound lanes. A California Highway Patrol (CHP) caller said they saw the head-on collision and that one of the vehicles was on fire.
Head-On Fatality Crash Occurs Near Railroad Overcrossing
The accident occurred between a Ford Escape and an RV. Cal Fire arrived at the scene and reported the fire was close to the railroad tracks and needed a crew to determine if the fire compromised the train bridge or supports. However, the overcrossing area appeared undamaged. Traffic was diverted for southbound traffic, and the Weed police department was notified that they would probably be getting an influx of traffic due to the freeway shutdown.
Investigation Conducted to Determine Cause of Fatal Accident
The County Coroner was called to the scene of the head-on fatality crash, as well as a chaplain. Both vehicles were towed. Information on the person’s identity who died in the collision will not be released until their family has received notification. An investigation by the CHP traffic detectives is determining the accident’s cause.
An Accident That Occurs Head-On
One of the most dangerous types of traffic accidents is a head-on collision. The velocity of two vehicles is combined when they collide. There is a high risk of physical harm and death as a result. The effects of a severe injury often include high medical costs, incapacity from work for an extended period of time, and pain and suffering. Among the most common causes are:
- Those who are distracted while driving
- The practice of driving too fast
- Experiencing fatigue
- Wrong-way drivers
- The use of drugs or alcohol by drivers
Recovery of Compensation Following a Wrongful Death
Close family members of someone who dies in a head-on fatality crash because of the negligence of another person or entity can file a wrongful death claim. By immediate family, it refers to the surviving spouse and the decedent’s children. By filing a wrongful death claim, they may recover the following:
- The wages the deceased family member would have earned until retirement age can be recovered. This includes their pension, insurance and other benefits.
- The cost of the funeral and burial are recovered.
- A spouse may recover financial compensation for losing consortium, affection and moral support the decedent provided.
- The children of the decedent may recover compensation for the loss of parental guidance, nurturing and support.
- If the decedent had regular chores they performed around the home, the cost of paying someone to perform those jobs is recoverable.
