Highway 4 Accident Injures Antioch Resident

Sadly, a recent three-car accident on Highway 4 ended with one fatality and another two people with injuries ranging from mild-to-major. An Antioch man that was involved in the wreck is suspected of having been driving under the influence, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The Coroner’s Office of Contra Costa County was able to publicly identify the deceased victim as Giovanni Vasquez, a 19-year old male from Antioch.

I want to give my deepest condolences and prayers to those that are grieving for the tragic loss of Giovanni Vasquez.

Accident Details

CHP reports state that it was around 9:30 p.m. that evening when a 46-year old man named Willie Hamlin, who was driving a Chevrolet Chevelle, lost control of his car and spun out before hitting two other cars. CHP said that Hamlin was driving in the eastbound lanes of Highway 4, just near the exit for Willow Pass Road. He was perceived to be speeding as he approached the exit, then suddenly the vehicle veered to the right and struck the surrounding guardrail. The car then veered left back into the lanes of traffic, which is when it crashed into a Nissan Sedan and then a Mitsubishi Lancer.

The driver behind the Nissan walked away from the accident with non-severe injuries. Giovanni Vasquez was the driver of the Mitsubishi, and unfortunately, he passed away at the scene. Hamlin sustained major injuries from the wreck and required hospitalization. He was transported to Walnut Creek’s John Muir Medical Center for treatment. According to Brandon Correia, CHP spokesman Officer, Hamlin’s injuries are not life-endangering. He is expected to be charged with a felony DUI in addition to gross vehicular manslaughter.

The accident resulted in temporary closure of the three far left lanes of Highway 4. The lanes were shut down for over an hour in order to conduct the CHP investigation.
