I’m Ed Smith, a Stockton auto accident attorney. If your travel plans include a trip west towards Interstate 5, you will need to plan an alternate route to get across as the Crosstown Freeway will be closed.
How Long Will Crosstown Freeway Be Closed?
The “Big Crosstown Fix” as it has been called will jam motorists up due to the westbound direction of the freeway being completely shut down during the following time frame:
Friday, April 29, 2016 at 10:00 p.m. through Monday, May 2, 2016 at 5:00 a.m.
Optional Detours:
- Highway 120 (Manteca)
- Highway 12 (Lodi)
What Can I Expect as a Motorist Travelling through this Area?
Travelling from Highway 99 over to Interstate 5 will be significantly more difficult during the above time frame — and seven additional weekends as well — because the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) has scheduled to conduct these major freeway closures as part of the Crosstown Big Fix project.
What Type of Repairs Will CalTrans be Making?
There will be 4 repair projects on the Crosstown Freeway:
- Treatment to the bridge decks
- Installation of an automated warning system
- Viaduct bridge maintenance and repair
- Extreme maintenance (landscaping, graffiti abatement, etc.)
Will the Improvements Enhance Safety?
According to Caltrans, the projects aim to enhance future safety for motorists and improve overall traffic operations. Crews will be out replacing worn hinge bearing pads, sealing bridge decks and putting in new joint seals.
Caltrans crews will be installing closed circuit television and changeable electronic message signs in an effort to perform automated warning system information that can give motorists a heads up of potential dangers ahead.
How Long Will The Repairs Take to be Completed?
The Crosstown Big Fix is scheduled for completion by December, 2016.
This means that during the eight different weekends it has scheduled repairs — there will be complete closures in one direction of the Crosstown Freeway. Caltrans explains that it will save 50 days of road construction and mean only 15 days of full road closures versus 140 days of partial road closures.
