The pedestrian was crossing the street at the intersection of Cottage Way and Fulton Avenue at the crosswalk around 10:00 in the evening when the accident happened, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Sacramento Hit and Run Accidents
Sacramento has had a bevy of hit and run accidents in the past year. Many are considered felonies if a person is seriously injured or dies. The problem often lies in apprehending the fleeing driver. There are things that can be done to catch them. Some are:
- Try to recall things about the vehicle, such as its color, type, size and make. If possible, write down the license plate number in part or in full. Even a fragment of it can help. Note whether the car had two or four doors, any decals on the vehicle, or specialty license plates.
- It’s amazing what you can remember. Try to recall what the driver looked like and whether there were any distinguishing features. Note if tattoos were visible and if other passengers were present.
- Finding witnesses is important in apprehending the driver. If someone says they saw the accident, ask for their contact information and what they remember about the hit and run crash. Some bystanders may have taken a picture or a video. Ask them if they can share it with you.
- Traffic surveillance cameras are your best bet in a hit and run accident, particularly on city streets or at an intersection. Businesses, government buildings, and schools also have surveillance cameras that might have captured the accident. More homes are also using surveillance cameras today. Your attorney will request copies to be used to apprehend the driver and to be a factor in your case. If there is any reluctance to provide the footage, your attorney will subpoena it.
Who Pays for the Damages
When a person is injured by a hit and run driver, they are concerned about who will compensate them for damages. If the person has insurance with uninsured motorist coverage for their vehicle, they will be covered if they are driving, walking, or bicycling. Even if they do not have a vehicle and hence no insurance, if a family member living with them does and carries uninsured motorist protection, they will be covered. There is no increase in their or a family member’s premium either.
What an Attorney Can Do
At our firm, we dispatch our investigative team to the site of the crash. They look for evidence at the accident site and interview witnesses. Our investigators canvass the neighborhood to find surveillance cameras on commercial buildings and homes in addition to traffic surveillance. In addition, they review police reports for inaccuracies. Once this information is garnered, our legal team works to ensure that our client receives the compensation they deserve.
