Hit-and-Run Crash Near Hickman

I’m Ed Smith, a Turlock auto accident lawyer. A vehicle carrying two occupants was struck by a hit-and-run driver near Hickman during the night of Thursday, July 13, 2017. As a result of the collision, one victim suffered traumatic injuries.

What Happened?

A 29-year-old Turlock man was behind the wheel of his Dodge Durango driving southbound along Hickman Road in the vicinity of Sixth Street at approximately 9:00 pm. At the same time, a man was driving his Kia Rio northbound along Hickman Road. The man driving the Dodge allegedly allowed his vehicle to enter the northbound lanes of travel. The motorist of the Kia attempted to avoid the Dodge but unfortunately it was too late. The Dodge collided with the Kia nearly head-on. The impact from the collision caused debris to damage another vehicle that was traveling behind the Kia.

Was Anybody Injured?

The man driving the Kia suffered traumatic injuries including lacerations and a broken nose. The man’s girlfriend was sitting in the passenger seat at the time of the crash. The girlfriend escaped injury from the collision due to the evasive action of her boyfriend.

Driver Flees Accident Scene

The man in the Dodge Durango fled from the scene of the accident and continued southbound along Hickman Road then proceeded westbound along Whitmore Avenue. Multiple witnesses contacted 911 to report the fleeing vehicle as it traveled without two of its tires, which created smoke and sparks from the contact with the asphalt of the roadway.

Authorities Detain Hit-and-Run Driver

The Dodge Durango continued to travel for four miles without two of its tires, leaving debris along the way from items falling out of the utility trailer. The vehicle eventually came to a rest after it veered into the opposing lane and collided with an irrigation pipe along the south side of Whitmore Avenue. Both rims on the left side of the SUV caused a small vegetation fire at the intersection of Gratton Road and Whitmore Avenue. When authorities arrived at the scene, they detained the driver of the Dodge on suspicion of driving under the influence. The man may face additional charges as the accident investigation continues.
