Hit and Run Death in Chico

I’m Ed Smith, a Chico Wrongful Death Lawyer. A man was found dead on the roadway at 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 9. I send my condolences to the family and friends of the victim in the wake of this horrible tragedy.

What Happened?

A passerby was driving along East Avenue early that morning and discovered a shopping cart and a large number of various objects strewn across the street. Among the debris, the driver spotted what looked like a person lying motionless on the asphalt. Upon further inspection they found it to be a man that appeared to be dead and quickly called 911.

The emergency personnel who arrived on the scene confirmed that the man indeed was dead. His body was found in the middle of the westbound lane in the vicinity of a crosswalk. Investigators believe that the man was killed after being struck by a vehicle while trying to cross East Avenue. The man was recognized by the Police as a homeless individual from Chico. Police Chief Mike O’Brien reported that he knew personally who the man was, but will withhold his identity as a courtesy until the man’s family can be properly notified.

The police on the scene closed down that section of roadway until 9:00 a.m. in order to process the crime scene properly and clean up the deceased’s possessions scattered about the surrounding area. Investigators are trying to find witnesses and possible camera footage to determine exactly what happened and to track down the individual responsible. They believe the suspect to have been driving a sports utility vehicle, a light colored Ford Explorer of the 2000 to 2005 model years.

The Chico Police Department sent out a statement asking the person who was responsible to turn themselves in and cooperate with the police. If anyone has any information regarding this tragic incident, please contact the Chico Police.

USA Today wrote an article on the alarmingly high number of hit and run accidents in California, calling it an “absolute plague”. In 2013 more than eight percent of all fatal and injury accidents in Los Angeles County were hit and run collisions. California law requires drivers to report accidents as soon as they can if the damage is over $750, or there are any injuries to those involved. Follow these steps to avoid any hit and run charges. If the other driver does not stop after an accident, call 911 as soon as you can. The sooner you call, the more quickly the police can respond and possibly find the other driver.
