What Happened?
A 50-year-old man was walking near the intersection of McKinley Avenue and Wishon Avenue near Fresno City College at about 1:00 am. The man was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The driver left the scene following the pedestrian accident, leaving the injured man behind.
Was the Pedestrian Injured?
Medical personnel arrived at the scene and located the injured man in the middle of the intersection. They immediately transported him to a hospital in critical condition. An update on his condition has not yet been released.
What Caused the Pedestrian Accident?
The pedestrian accident is still under investigation. A cause has not yet been determined. A Traffic Collision Report is usually processed within two weeks from the date of the accident. Officials have not found the suspected hit-and-run driver. The vehicle has been described as an older model sedan, possibly gray or blue in color. It was last seen speeding southbound along Wishon Avenue right after the incident.
Hit-and-Run Accidents Involving Pedestrians
Accidents involving pedestrians are among the most serious type of collision. A pedestrian has no form of protection against a moving vehicle, making them vulnerable to absorb any form of impact. Drivers involved in a pedestrian accident are obligated to remain at the scene and render aid to those who have suffered injuries until officials arrive. Any motorist that fails to do so is considered negligent and can face serious charges. It is hard to believe that a driver could be so cold as to flee the scene of a pedestrian accident, leaving the victim to suffer traumatic or even fatal injuries.
How to Protect Yourself in Hit-and-Run Accidents
Hit-and-run accidents are difficult cases to handle. Filing a claim against the insurance policy of the hit-and-run driver may be virtually impossible if the suspect is never found. In such circumstances, accident victims should resort to their own insurance policy for possible coverage. One type of protection that may assist a victim of a hit-and-run accident is Uninsured/Under-insured Motorist Coverage (UM). This coverage is not required under California state law, however, it is a very good idea to include this coverage on your auto insurance policy. UM protection may pay for the damages caused by a hit-and-run accident or an accident with an uninsured/under-insured driver. For more details, contact an experienced Fresno car accident lawyer.
