Accident on Marconi Avenue at Cap City Freeway Results in Injury
A hit-and-run with injuries was reported in Sacramento on December 12 in an intersection accident. The collision occurred along eastbound Marconi Avenue at the Cap City Freeway in the Arden-Arcade area around 7:32 a.m. According to the report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a Chrysler 300 crashed into another vehicle, and the suspect vehicle continued on to the light rail station on Roseville Road.
Good Samaritans Keep Hit-and-Run Driver From Leaving
At least one party who witnessed the accident followed the suspect vehicle and was attempting to stop the driver from leaving the accident scene on foot. First responders with the Sacramento Fire Department provided no information on the patient who was injured in the hit-and-run. The accident is under investigation to determine the cause.
Hit-and-Run Accidents
The frequency of accidents caused by a fleeing driver has increased over the past several years despite high penalties and jail time. Some of the most common reasons for this increase are:
- The driver has a suspended or revoked driver’s license and is afraid of the consequences if they remain at the accident scene.
- The driver never had a driver’s license. This is very common in California, where almost two million drivers are unlicensed.
- The driver has a warrant for outstanding parking tickets or other offenses.
- The vehicle is not insured. Again, this is very common in California, with over 14.7 percent of all drivers lacking insurance coverage. Being caught driving without insurance results in a fine of $200 for the first offense and up to $500 for the second. In addition, the driver may lose their driving privileges.
- Drunk or impaired drivers are more likely to leave the accident site. Some may confess to the accident after they sobered up.
- Panic is a common reason for leaving the accident site. For some individuals, this is an automatic response. Many will turn themselves in after they have had time to think.
Uninsured Motorist Insurance
Although every effort is made to catch the hit-and-run driver, on occasion, this does not happen. The injured party can take advantage of their own uninsured/underinsured insurance to pay for medical expenses, loss of wages, and other costs. This add-on policy is offered to all motorists in California. It gives them a way to cover expenses when they are injured by an underinsured or uninsured driver, whether they are on foot, in their vehicle, or riding a bicycle.
If the injured party does not have this protection and someone in their household does, they can use their coverage. Using this insurance does not cause a rise in insurance rates.
Investigating a Hit-and-Run Accident
We send our investigative team to the scene of the accident to uncover evidence that is needed in resolving a hit-and-run successfully. Our investigators search for clues that identify the make and model of the vehicle such as paint smears and witness accounts.
Our investigators also speak with neighboring businesses to obtain surveillance footage of the area to help identify the culprits. In addition, traffic surveillance camera video footage is used for the same purpose. Our firm’s investigators also use accident reconstruction to determine liability. Once this is finished, our injury attorneys use the data to build a robust case for our client.
