Honda Recall for Stall Risk by Defective Fuel Pumps

American Honda Motor Company has issued a worldwide recall for 1.4 million vehicles for stall risk caused by fuel pumps that are believed to be defective. The safety issue stems from the low-pressure fuel pump reportedly failing inside the fuel tank. The engine may stall while driving if the fuel pump fails, increasing the risk of a car accident. According to a recall report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there was an exposure of product solvent drying for extended periods during the manufacturing process by the supplier, Denso. This may cause excessive fuel absorption and cracks on the surface, which may later cause the impeller to deform and fail. As of May 21, 2020, Honda has received 68 field reports, 183 warranty claims, and no reports of accidents or injuries related to this safety issue.

Owners will be notified by Honda if their vehicle is affected by the recall, and the fuel pump assembly will be replaced by dealers, free of charge. A notification schedule has not yet been provided by the manufacturer.

Determining Fault for a Defective Fuel Pump

When your vehicle stalls on the road due to a faulty fuel pump and causes an accident resulting in injury, the driver is not the one at fault. A personal injury lawyer in Sacramento can hold the right parties financially accountable for their negligent actions. When it comes to defective fuel pumps, the manufacturer of the vehicle or the fuel pump may be held liable. There could be a flaw in the design or manufacturing process that caused the car part not to function as intended.

While automakers are obligated to test vehicles to meet specific federal safety standards, there could be defects that may make the car dangerous over time. No matter what caused the vehicle defect, an injury lawyer will investigate what went wrong with the car, why it failed, and who is liable for any accidents or injuries related to the safety issue.
