Hyundai Seatbelt Recall

The Korean automaker, Hyundai, has recently issued a safety recall for nearly one million of their vehicles on the roadway today. The reason being that there may be a defect in the seatbelt component of the vehicle. This may bring a concern for safety for occupants riding in the vehicle in the incident of an automobile accident.

Why?

Hyundai Motor America has issued a seatbelt recall for their popular selling vehicle, the Sonata. The recall, which affects approximately 977,778 vehicles, was issued due to an injury that was reported that may have been caused by an alleged defect in the seat belt component of the vehicle.

In the front seat assembly of the Hyundai Sonata, there is a seatbelt anchor pretensioner that is locked onto the inner sill structure of the vehicle. During assembly of the vehicle, the anchor pretensioner is latched onto the sill before being connected to the seatbelt linkage. If for any reason the connector does not fully fasten when the linkage is applied onto the connector, the seatbelt may detach from the anchor pretensioner.

This brings a concern for safety for occupants riding in this vehicle because the seat belt linkage may detach in an automobile accident. If this were to happen, the occupants of these affected vehicles may be exposed to a higher risk of traumatic injuries or even death.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

The following Hyundai vehicles are affected by the seatbelt recall:

  • 2011 to 2014 Hyundai Sonata
  • 2011 to 2015 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

How Will My Vehicle Be Fixed?

Hyundai will notify all owners of vehicles included in the recall by first class mail to return their vehicle to the dealer to properly  fix the defect.
