Injuries Reported After Multiple Collisions on Route 50
I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento personal injury lawyer. Three accidents that were related occurred in the early hours of July 27 along U.S. Route 50 heading into West Sacramento. The California Highway Patrol is investigating a cause of the crashes. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs was a causative factor in this accidents.
Accident Details
The crashes began when a white compact collided with the back of a SUV in the area of U.S. Route 50 where it meets with U.S. Route 80. The impact left the SUV disabled and in the middle of the road. That’s when a pickup came along and struck the disabled SUV. While the driver of the pickup was able to move their vehicle over to the side of the road, a large FedEx truck came along. Seeing the disabled SUV in the road, the driver swerved to avoid a collision. This resulted in the truck rolling over on its side, which blocked all the traffic lanes.
Injuries in the Crashes
There were no fatalities from the multiple collisions, however, the CHP reported that victims in the crash had suffered moderate injuries. Although no one involved in the crash was cited, that may change depending on the results of the ongoing investigation. It took about two and one/half hours to clear the accident scene.
Liability in a Multiple Vehicle Crash
Proving liability in a multiple vehicle crash can be complicated and depends on many factors. For example, in the above instance, the driver of the SUV whose vehicle was struck multiple times may be able to collect damages from the drivers of both the compact car and the pickup. However, there might be other circumstances that could reduce the amount of damages.
Comparative Negligence in a Motor Vehicle Accident
Did the driver of the SUV stop suddenly in the road or was the second driver not paying attention? Had any of the drivers been drunk driving? Was anyone talking or texting on their cell phone or exhibiting other negligent behavior? Was someone speeding? Because California is a pure comparative fault state, the amount of damages may be reduced by that person’s portion of negligence that is deemed to have contributed to the crash. A personal injury lawyer who works extensively with car accidents can examine the evidence, recreate the scene by using crash reconstruction techniques, employ expert witnesses and build a strong case for maximum compensation.
Car Accident Statistics
Crash stats provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that the number of people injured in motor vehicle accidents increased substantially in 2015 over the previous year. In fact, injuries increased by 105,000. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows that California experienced 1,370 multiple vehicle crashes that same year, making it the highest state for multiple vehicle crashes in the country.
