Two-Vehicle Collision on U.S. 50 Resulted in Rollover
An injury collision occurred in Rosemont on May 10 that may have been caused by a speeding driver. The crash happened along westbound U.S. 50 just west of the northbound Bradshaw Road on-ramp around 10:09 a.m. between an Acura and Ford pickup. According to the detailed incident report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a witness to the collision said the driver of the pickup was acting recklessly and caused the collision. The driver was allegedly traveling at more than 100 mph when the accident happened.
First responders with the Sacramento Fire Department arrived to find the pickup crashed on the shoulder of the road. The other vehicle was overturned in the number four-lane. One person was reported to have suffered injuries in the crash. Tow trucks were called to the scene to remove the vehicles, and lanes were reopened around 10:30 a.m. An investigation into the injury collision is ongoing.
Speed and Accidents
Speed is a risk factor in an injury collision. The faster the speed, the more serious the injuries and the higher the risk for fatalities. According to a study performed by the Federal Highway Administration, the difference in mass matters. If all vehicles were the same size and weight, it would reduce the number of fatalities in an accident by 25 percent. But, of course, they aren’t. This means that those traveling in smaller vehicles are at a much higher risk of serious injuries.
Rollovers in an Injury Collision
Some vehicles, such as SUVs, vans, and light trucks, are more apt to experience a rollover than others. The reason this happens is that they have a higher center of gravity. However, any vehicle can be involved in a rollover. The problem is the vehicle can experience roof crush, and the force of the rollover can cause seat belts to break and toss those inside around, increasing the severity of injuries.
Roof Crush Can Cause Catastrophic Injuries
All auto manufacturers are held to standards on the strength of a vehicle’s roof. They have to support 3.5 times a vehicle’s weight. This is important since the strength of a vehicle is less on its side, where support may be lacking.
Unfortunately, not all auto manufacturers abide by these rules, and when a vehicle rolls over, roof crush occurs, which causes it to collapse on top of the occupants inside. Trauma that can occur due to roof crush includes brain and spinal cord damage as well as increased severity of bone fractures. In these instances, the auto manufacturer and others in the production line may be held liable for those injuries through a product liability lawsuit.
It is important to retain a vehicle following an automobile accident. This is so engineers can examine it for defects such as roof crush, a seat belt that let go, or airbags that malfunctioned.
