What Happened?
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the collision occurred at about 3:20 p.m. on State Route 1 south of Fort Bragg when 35-year-old Fair Oaks resident Jason Fish had been riding a 2012 Harley Davidson bike in the southbound lane.
Officials indicated that the Fish had been driving somewhere between 25 to 30 miles per hour when he approached a curve in the roadway and attempted to slow his vehicle. As a result of attempting to brake, Fish reportedly lost control of his motorcycle and struck a guardrail on the side of the highway.
Injuries
When CHP received a report alerting them that a motorcyclist had been injured, they immediately sent emergency medical personnel to the crash site. Responders discovered that Fish had broken his right knee and had also suffered a serious laceration to the back of his right knee. The man was rushed to the Mendocino Coast District Hospital in Ukiah so that he could receive emergency medical attention.
Ukiah and Mendocino Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Research data published by UC Berkeley shows that, during 2013-2016, Ukiah has seen a total of 6 injury-causing motorcycle accidents. Of these accidents, 5 involved visible non-severe injuries and 1 involved only a complaint of pain.
This data suggests that Ukiah is a relatively safer place to ride a motorcycle compared to Mendocino County as a whole, in which about 5 percent of injuries sustained in motorcycle accidents were fatal and another 31.33 percent were considered severe.
Additionally, about 10 percent of traumatic motorcycle accidents in Mendocino involve drivers who are under the influence of either drugs or alcohol.
Faulty Motorcycle Parts
Motorcycle accidents can happen for a variety of reasons. Most people usually think of DUI or negligent drivers, but motorcycle accidents can also be caused by motorcycle parts or modifications that don’t meet proper safety standards.
If you have been in an accident caused by a faulty motorcycle, it is possible that the manufacturer, retailer, or mechanic that left you with an unsafe vehicle is liable to pay for the damages you have received as a result. However, products liability claims are often time-consuming, complex, and require very specific knowledge. Because of this, calling a lawyer when one suspects they may have a viable products liability claim is a good idea.
