Accident on El Camino Avenue Causes Injury
A two-vehicle crash in Sacramento on March 8 caused a chest injury to one person. The collision happened around 5:51 p.m. along El Camino Avenue between Millrace Road and Eastern Avenue in the Arden-Arcade area. The incident report filed by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that a Nissan and two-door vehicle were involved in the crash.
Authorities Determining Cause of Two-Vehicle Crash
One party complained of an injury to their ribs in the collision. Major front-end damage was reported to the Nissan. No information was released on whether the injured person received treatment at the scene for their injury or was transported to a hospital for further evaluation. The two-vehicle crash is under investigation by the CHP to find out how it occurred and to assign fault.
Chest Trauma From an Accident
Injuries to the chest are fairly common in a two-vehicle crash and can be serious, with symptoms not appearing until days afterward. Those who are not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the collision can crash into the steering wheel, dash or doors. Those who are wearing seat belts can be injured by them. The airbags in a vehicle can also cause injuries.
However, using your seat belts and having a vehicle with airbags has been proven to be much safer than if you don’t. Some of the common types of trauma that can occur in a chest injury include:
- Rib fractures can occur, and in more extreme injuries, it can cause a punctured lung.
- The sternum (breastbone) can be broken.
- Tracheal damage can occur, which is your windpipe, causing difficulty breathing.
- A punctured lung can collapse, resulting in breathing problems and requiring rapid medical attention.
Another problem that can occur with seatbelts is defects. A defect in the straps or buckle can make the belt let loose at a critical time, resulting in injuries. In cases where defective products are involved, the injured party may recover compensation by filing a product liability claim against the manufacturer.
Injuries Caused by Airbags in a Two-Vehicle Crash
Early airbags were known to cause injuries such as burns and metal shrapnel. Although they have become somewhat safer over the years, defects can still cause injuries by not providing the protection they should. Once again, the manufacturer of a defective seat belt can be held responsible and you may be able to obtain compensation through filing an auto product liability claim.
How Can a Lawyer Help?
A car accident lawyer can help you obtain the compensation you deserve after suffering an injury in a two-vehicle crash. The lawyer investigates the accident to gather the evidence to support your claim and then uses it to construct a strong case to negotiate with the insurance company or take it to civil court if necessary. Recoverable damages include:
Medical expenses caused by the accident can be recovered from the hospitalization and doctors’ bills to rehabilitation. If the injury is ongoing, those costs are factored into the settlement.
- Salary the injured party lost because of the inability to work can be claimed. This includes any regular bonuses, tips and other perks of the job such as insurance and pension benefits. If the injured party is unable to return to work due to disability or has to take a lower-paying job, that is factored in also.
- Recovery of damages for the injured person’s pain and suffering is possible. This includes psychological and emotional pain.
