Intersection Accident in Camarillo
I’m Ed Smith, a Camarillo car accident lawyer. A rollover accident occurred in Camarillo on Tuesday, May 9. Although it was reported that there were injuries suffered in the crash, no further information has been released on who was injured and how serious the injuries were. At this time, I would like to extend my hopes that the injuries were not serious and that the people involved in the accident will be able to resume their normal lives soon.
What Happened
The collision between two vehicles happened at Potrero Road and Lewis Road shortly after 5:30 a.m. The crash caused one of the vehicles to turn over. Traffic heading westbound was blocked by fire officials, while the occupant/occupants of the overturned vehicle were extricated. Tow trucks and paramedics also arrived to help. Police are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
Incidence of Intersection Accidents
Intersections are a common location for accidents. The Federal Highway Administration reported that around one-quarter of all accidents happen at intersections, and almost half of those crashes resulted in some type of injury. Obviously, intersections without traffic signals see more accidents than those equipped with signals but accidents still happen. In 2014, 8,661 people lost their lives nationwide in intersection accidents. Traffic lights were installed at intersections where 2,675 fatalities occurred. Of those accidents, 112 involved accidents with bicyclists and 648 were with pedestrians.
Intersection Accident Injuries
Even low-speed accidents can cause serious injuries, especially when a rollover occurs. Bone fractures, a condition called dashboard knee, fractures to the spine and other injuries such as head and brain injuries can occur due to the impact. The result of an injury can mean an extended period of hospitalization with resultant medical bills, recuperative period at home, physical therapy and other out of pocket expenses and lost income.
Causes of Intersection Accidents
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a large percent of all accidents are those occurring in an intersection. The majority of those accidents are caused by driver error. The main types of errors are:
- Violating traffic rules, such as speeding and disobeying traffic signals
- Wrongly calculating the other driver’s speed
- Making a turn without being able to adequately see other drivers approaching the intersection
- Distracted driving leading to a failure to observe intersection movement
