Accident at Elk Grove Boulevard Intersection Causes Several Injuries
An intersection collision in Elk Grove on April 14 resulted in injuries to several people. The accident involved two vehicles, which was reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The vehicles collided during the evening hours at the intersection of westbound Elk Grove and Franklin boulevards. Several people were transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation and medical care. The injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. Elk Grove Boulevard westbound was shut down at the turn lanes while an investigation was conducted by authorities.
Why Intersections Are Dangerous
Forty percent of all traffic collisions occur at intersections, which makes them more dangerous than highways and city streets. Not only do motor vehicles converge in intersections, but they are also used by pedestrians, bicycle riders, motorcyclists, and others. A driver has to look out for negligent motorists, but the bad design of an intersection or poor maintenance can lead to accidents. When someone is injured because of that negligence, they may suffer serious injuries.
Seeking Help Following an Intersection Collision
People who are injured in an intersection collision can suffer broken bones, serious head injuries, and other trauma. They can end up having to spend time in the hospital and may face surgeries, an extended stay, and a long recuperative period before they are able to return to work. When negligence was the cause of their injury, a lawyer experienced in handling intersection collisions can help them recover fair compensation to cover their losses and reimburse them for their pain and suffering. My law firm has helped many Elk Grove residents in obtaining compensation following an intersection accident.
Common Causes of an Intersection Accident
There are multiple reasons an accident at an intersection occurs. Most of them are caused by negligence. Some of the ways an accident at a crossroads happens are:
- A negligent driver runs a stop sign or red light: This is one of the major causes of a serious intersection collision. Since another motorist is often legally passing through an intersection at the same time as the red-light runner, their vehicle ends up being involved in a T-bone collision.
- A driver is speeding: A driver going above the speed limit when approaching an intersection may be unable to stop before crashing into another vehicle stopped at the crosswalk. Rear-end collisions can cause serious injuries even at lower speeds.
- The driver negligently makes a right-hand turn: One of the problems at intersections is that a driver wanting to make a right turn doesn’t always have a clear view of oncoming traffic. Larger vehicles stopped at the crosswalk can make it virtually impossible to see if the way is clear. This can result in an accident with oncoming traffic.
- The driver makes a risky left turn: A driver who turns left after the turn light has changed to red risks a collision with oncoming traffic. Another way a left-turning driver runs into trouble is when they attempt to change lanes during the turn itself. This negligent behavior can end up causing a sideswipe accident.
- Making an illegal U-turn: Although U-turns are allowed in some intersections, some drivers try to make this maneuver in places where they are not permitted. Because it is unexpected and interferes with traffic inside the intersection, it can lead to an accident.
