I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto truck accident lawyer. An accident at an intersection in Modesto between a semi and a passenger vehicle resulted in injuries. According to authorities, the drivers of both vehicles were taken for medical treatment.
What Happened
The accident occurred at the intersection between Finch and Mitchell Roads shortly after 9:30 p.m. on August 31st. According to the California Highway Patrol, the drivers of a Honda sedan and a semi suffered lacerations and were taken by paramedics to a local medical center for evaluation and treatment. Authorities said that the two individuals suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigation
An investigation into why the accident happened is proceeding. There is no word at this time if drugs or alcohol were involved. The CHP is actively determining who was at fault in the accident.
Intersection Accidents
According to a National Center for Biotechnology Information study of intersection accidents nationally, 4,500 fatalities occurred. The number of fatal crashes in an intersection regulated by a traffic light totaled 800 that involved two-vehicle crashes. There were also 1,336 crashes at intersections where traffic was regulated with a stop sign. In both cases, one of the two vehicles involved in a crash either ran the stop sign or the traffic light.
Driver Age and Intersection Crashes
Older drivers, 65-years-of-age and older, were found to be more prone to accidents at intersections. The reason that accidents happened was commonly due to the failure of one of the drivers not yielding to the driver who had the right of way. The majority of accidents occurred when an older driver was making a left hand turn at streets with traffic signals. The crashes happened most often during the day between the hours of 9:00 in the morning and 3:00 in the afternoon.
Intersection Accidents: Urban Areas
The majority of intersection crashes (84 percent) occurred at larger urban intersections controlled by traffic lights. Smaller intersections with a stop sign had 37 percent of the intersection accidents. The primary reason for crashes with big trucks at intersections involved brakes. Forty-five percent of the truck drivers were found to have brake violations, which indicates poor maintenance.
Roadway Grade Affects Intersection Accidents
Level roadways led the reasons for intersection crashes by 85 percent. Otherwise, 15 percent of crashes occurred on a graded roadway with a stop sign, and failure to yield accidents occurred 18 percent of the time on graded roadways. Other reasons that led to road accidents caused by trucks included:
- Tire blowouts where the driver loses control of the vehicle
- Weather conditions
- Improper maneuvering
- Driver fatigue
- Improperly loaded cargo that shifts
- Speeding
- Drifting out of the traffic lane
