Interstate 5 Big Rig Accident
I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento truck accident attorney. A big rig traveling northbound on Interstate 5 during the morning of Monday, December 26, 2016, ended up crashing into trees along the highway, which caused traffic mayhem for motorists returning home after the holiday weekend.
What Happened?
A driver was behind the wheel of a big rig, carrying lettuce, was traveling northbound along Interstate 5. For unknown reasons, the big rig drove off the roadway at approximately 4:30 am and crashed into trees along the highway in the vicinity of the Interstate 5 north and Highway 80 east connector. The driver of the big rig was transported to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. Sergeant Dave Baker from the California Highway Patrol concluded that the big rig was destroyed as a result of the impact with the tree.
Traffic Mayhem
Due to the trucking accident, authorities shut down the northbound Interstate 5 junction to eastbound Interstate 80 for most of the day to allow sufficient time for clean-up crews and investigators to assess the situation. As a result of the impact, spilled diesel occurred. Crews were still unloading lettuce from the truck at about 1:00 pm and Caltrans did not reopen the freeway connector until shortly before 5:00 pm. Drivers that were traveling home from the holiday weekend along Interstate 5 north and southbound were faced with traffic mayhem during the afternoon hours.
Truck Accidents
Truck accidents comprise a high percentage of traffic accident collisions and death. Truck accidents caused by the negligence of a truck driver often lead to traumatic and even catastrophic injuries, such as brain injuries or death. In 2012 alone, there were 3,021 fatalities caused by truck accidents and 72% of these accidents caused the victim in the other vehicle to suffer fatal injuries.
