Invokana Linked to Amputations

Most viewers have also heard the litany of side effects that seem to accompany almost every medication. While many of these side effects are both rare and minor, the diabetes medication Invokana has been linked to major side effects that pose serious health concerns to countless people.
Invokana was a Breakthrough
The epidemic of obesity and diabetes has been prominent in the national news cycle recently. This has fueled debate surrounding the government expenditure on healthcare, new campaigns to improve diet and exercise, and has spurred research into countless new medications aimed at controlling diabetes and obesity. Invokana (also known as Canagliflozin) was welcomed into the market as a new class of medication called a sodium glucose cotransporter 2, or SGLT-2, inhibitor. This type of drug was supposed to control the amount of glucose in the bloodstream. This would lower people’s blood sugar and keep the complications of diabetes in check.
Major Side Effects
While every medication has side effects, those seen with Invokana have been unacceptably serious and high. The many side effects of Invokana include kidney failure (not that different from the possibilities seen with abdominal trauma) and amputations of limbs, including feet and legs. Most people fear amputations following extremity trauma; however, people taking Invokana have to worry about this happening as medical side effects. This is unacceptable.
Research Studies Support this Finding
Two different clinical trials have been performed to analyze the rates of various side effects of Invokana. The first trial was called CANVAS-R, a study on the effects of Canagliflozin to Renal Endpoints in various Adult Participants with Diabetes Mellitus Type 2) and the other was called CANVAS (Canagliflozin Cardiovascular Assessment Study). The results of these studies demonstrated that patients treated with Canagliflozin (Invokana) had legs and feet amputated at twice the rate of patients who were treated with a placebo alone (a placebo is a biologically inactive placeholder medication). When patients are having their limbs amputated as a side effect of medications, this represents an unacceptable product liability issue. Furthermore, other side effects of Invokana, such as diabetic ketoacidosis, represent life-threatening side effects that could lead to a wrongful death. With so many medications and options for the treatment of diabetes, the risks of taking Invokana could very well outweigh the proposed benefits. All patients should speak with a medical professional about these side effects before agreeing to treatment.
