Tragic Car Crash Near Clear Lake

On Sunday night, October 17, 2021, a pregnant Kelseyville woman and her unborn child were killed in a head-on collision near Clear Lake.

Details of the Wrong-Way Incident

At approximately 8:05 p.m. on Sunday evening, a pregnant woman who has since been identified as 38-year-old Nicole Parrot from Kelseyville, California, was driving a 2019 Nissan north on Highway 29 in the vicinity of Park Way, according to representatives from the California Highway Patrol (CHP). At the same time, a man from Lakeport, California, was driving a 2019 Cadillac XTS in the same lane as Ms. Parrot. Unfortunately, the Cadillac driver was traveling south, which was the wrong direction of travel. A violent crash occurred between the two vehicles near Clear Lake’s northwest shore. As a result of the collision, Ms. Parrot was ejected from her vehicle and was killed, along with her unborn baby.

The driver of the Cadillac, later identified as 34-year-old Jesse Maldonado, also died at the accident scene.

Condition of Other Involved Parties

Other occupants of Ms. Parrott’s Nissan included two males from Kelseyville: a 41-year-old and a 16-year-old, according to authorities with the CHP. Both passengers were transported by paramedics to Sutter Lakeside Hospital in Lakeport. The older man suffered major injuries; the teen’s injuries were less severe.

Continuing Investigation by the CHP

Investigators with the CHP are continuing their investigation as to why the Cadillac driver was traveling in the wrong direction. They noted that the crash occurred during rainy and cloudy weather conditions.

Top Causes of Wrong-Way Driving

Most accidents caused by wrong-way driving are the result of driver error. The majority of such accidents happen when confused or impaired motorists enter a highway via an exit ramp rather than an entrance ramp. While we have no information as to why the driver in this Lakeport incident was traveling the wrong way, below are some of the most common reasons that may cause a wrong-way driving incident:

  • The driver is under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or prescription medications.
  • The driver is distracted or confused.
  • The driver is not familiar with the area.
  • The highway exit and entrance ramps are not clearly marked.
  • The highway exit and entrance ramps do not have adequate signage or lighting.
  • The highway exit and entrance ramps are poorly designed.
  • Bad weather, darkness, or other lack of visibility can contribute to driver confusion.
  • Fatigued or drowsy driving can cause driver confusion, inattention, or lack of reaction time.
  • Mental health issues could be at play – there have been instances of drivers intentionally traveling in the wrong direction as a means of attempting suicide.
