Learn How to Get a Police Report in Ojai
I’m Ed Smith, an Ojai car accident lawyer. One question often asked when a driver, or passengers have been in a car accident is how to get a copy of the police report. Also referred to as a traffic collision report, this information is completed by the police officer responding to an accident, and having a copy can be valuable for supporting your claim.
Information Included on the Police Report
After the responding officer determines whether medical attention is required for anyone involved in the crash, he or she will begin noting the following information to be included in the report:
The report will include the date, time and location of your accident. Details about the vehicles will be gathered such as make, model, color and license plate numbers of the vehicles involved. From all the drivers, he will obtain names, license and phone numbers, home addresses and insurance information. If the accident resulted in injuries, that too will be noted. The officer will also speak to others in the crash, including any witnesses about what they saw and will take their contact information from them to be added to the report. The time of day the accident occurred will be jotted down, along with the weather conditions at the time and any notations on the condition of the road where the crash occurred.
Additional information included in a police report may be important to your case. It will include any arrests made or citations given at the time of the accident. For example, the other driver may have made an illegal turn, run a stoplight or have been driving impaired. Finally, the officer will take a number of photos of the accident scene. This will include placement and condition of the vehicles involved and any roadway damage such as skid marks or torn spots in the roadway.
How to Request a Copy of the Police Report
The California Highway Patrol has an online site where requests for copies of Collision Reports can be filled out. Instructions for filling out the form are online. You can also request the report by mail or go to the local CHP office. There is a charge for this service. In Ojai, you can visit or call the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office to find out the particulars of requesting a police report.
