Leg Reconstruction: Microvascular Flaps

Bones can be destroyed, connective tissue can be severed, and the blood vessels are compressed. This can have serious medical implications. It can be difficult to reconstruct a limb that has been crushed, and many people have long-term functional use deficits that can impact their quality of life.
The study, published in the Plastic Reconstruction Journal, discussed the critical role that a microvascular surgeon plays in a reconstruction of catastrophic leg injuries. The research proposed that complete rebuilding of small blood vessels, using flaps and skin grafts, could lead to an improved functional outcome. Based on the results of the study, individuals who had microvascular flap reconstruction within seven days of their injury had a significantly lower rate of complications than those who did not. Common complications following these injuries include skin graft loss and infection. Many of the individuals in the study achieved a full recovery with a return to baseline functioning.
