Lincoln Motorcycle Injuries
With over 182,000 motorcycles registered in California, the likelihood of Lincoln motorcycle injuries is high. When involved in a collision with a motor vehicle, it isn’t surprising injuries happen since a motorcycle rider has little protection against a vehicle made of metal. This is because a Harley weighs in at around 500 pounds, and the average motor vehicle weighs 2,871 pounds. Being involved in a collision often means the rider will be ejected from the vehicle, land underneath the cycle or crash into the car that caused the accident. The types of serious injuries that can be sustained in these collisions are explored below.
Types of Lincoln Motorcycle Injuries
The types of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident can be varied, but some are more common than others. A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that examined motorcyclist injuries reported in emergency rooms nationwide shows the following:
- Feet and legs: According to the report, about 30 percent of motorcycle crashes resulted in injuries to the feet and legs. This may include road rash, cuts and abrasions, and broken bones. The tibia is the bone most often fractured, followed by the fibula and femur.
- Neck and head: These were the second most common injuries suffered in a motorcycle crash. Closed and open head injuries, including a concussion and more severe forms of traumatic brain injury occurred as well as cervical strain or sprain. Riders who wore helmets experienced fewer TBIs and less severe injuries than others.
- Chest injuries: The upper trunk area that includes the shoulder, chest, and back are the third most common areas affected and could occur in Lincoln motorcycle injuries. Due to the presence of vital organs in the chest, this can cause a devastating injury.
- Hands and arms: The upper extremities are next and may include similar injuries to those that happen to the feet and legs such as road rash and broken bones. The radius and ulna are most commonly broken in the upper body, followed by the humerus.
- Lower trunk: The abdominal area can experience injuries such as internal bleeding, damaged organs, and broken hips or pelvic fractures.
Conspicuity Helps Motorcyclists Avoid Accidents With Other Vehicles
While many motorcycle riders take to the road on black bikes and wearing dark clothing such as jeans and jackets, this may not be the best choice. According to many motorists who were in a collision with a motorcycle rider, they never saw the rider. Wearing more brightly colored clothing and riding a motorcycle that is white or red or using reflective tape makes the rider more conspicuous to other motorists.
Protective Clothing Can Help Prevent Lincoln Motorcycle Injuries
All motorcycle riders know that wearing sturdy boots and gloves helps avoid injuries to the feet and hands when in an accident. Jackets specifically geared for motorcycle riders offer the added advantage of having shoulder armor, and some now have built-in airbags for added protection. Helmets approved by the U.S Department of Transportation are essential, and a few models have blinking lights on the rear of the helmet.
