Livestreamed Fatal Accident Caused by Blown Tire
I’m Ed Smith, a Merced auto accident attorney. A fatal single vehicle accident took place near Los Banos in Merced County on July 21, 2017. A statement by the defense attorney of the involved motorist revealed that he believes the crash was caused by a blown tire, not social media and driving under the influence (DUI). The exact cause of the collision is not yet known due to ongoing investigation.
Accident Details
An 18-year-old resident of Stockton was driving her white 2003 Buick Century on Henry Miller Road near Mercey Springs Road. The driver was allegedly livestreaming via her Instagram while driving her vehicle. The motorist lost control of her vehicle after allegedly over-correcting a turn. The car rolled multiple times into a wire fence and came to a stop near Henry Miller Road and Highway 165.
Nature of Injuries
There were two 14-year-old female passengers sitting in the rear seats of the vehicle at the time of the accident. Officials reported that the two passengers were allegedly unrestrained by safety belts. One of the two passengers was identified as a Fresno resident and the other was identified as a sister of the driver. She suffered a major leg injury resulting from the crash. The motorist’s sister was ejected from the vehicle through the rear window of the vehicle upon impact. The young sibling, sadly, passed away at the accident scene.
We wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of the young victim that passed away in this devastating crash. We also wish for a swift and speedy recovery for the other injured parties.
Defense Attorney Claims Blown Tire Caused Accident
A defense attorney was appointed to the teen driver to represent her in court. The court-appointed lawyer stated that the accident was believed to have been caused by a mechanical problem stemming from one of the tires on the vehicle. The crash may have been caused by wear and tear of a tire, which caused it to blow out and veer out of control.
Aside from the attorney’s statement, prosecutors claimed that evidence from the livestreamed video showed the driver taking her hands off the steering wheel. This detail will play as a key piece of evidence in this case.
The 18-year-old motorist involved in the fatal accident has been charged by the Merced County District Attorney’s Office with six felonies, including drunken driving and gross vehicular manslaughter. The teen driver has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Family Struggling After Heartbreaking Accident
The father of the two siblings involved in the unfortunate accident has spoken on the behalf of his family. He informed the Merced Sun-Star Newspaper that his family continues to struggle with the loss of their two daughters. The family believes that the fate of their daughter will be in God’s hands and they will move forward from there.
