Sacramento Road Construction Projects
While many business enterprises have been on hold during the Covid-19 pandemic, the companies and agencies involved in road construction have been going gangbusters. The amount of traffic on the roads is still significantly reduced from pre-pandemic levels, so it has been a good time to get road repairs and maintenance completed. In some areas, such as Colfax, the work could even be done during regular business hours since the traffic was so greatly reduced.
Here are some projects currently in progress or scheduled to begin soon:
SAC 5 Corridor Enhancement Project
Affecting Interstate 5, this project extends south of the overcrossing at Elk Grove Boulevard to the American River Bridge. The project’s budget is $370 million and will include installation of new High Occupancy Vehicle lanes, rehabilitation of pavement, construction of sound walls and ramp meters, replacement of a pedestrian bridge, installation of new fiber-optic technology, and extension of some exit and entrance ramps. Most of the road construction work will be done during overnight shifts, and in fact, portions of Interstate 5 are undergoing night work at the present time. Major daytime traffic-interfering construction in certain areas will begin in about a year.
Rio Vista Bridge Preservation Project
This project affects State Route 12 in Sacramento and Solano Counties. This $37 million project is currently in progress, and there is daily work happening on different parts of the bridge. The bridge crosses the Sacramento River just east of Rio Vista. Serious delays are expected during the overnight hours for eastbound motorists on SR-12, as well as north and southbound motorists traveling SR-160.
U.S. Highway 50 & Zinfandel Drive Interchange Improvement
The City of Rancho Cordova is the lead agency on this project, which will add another lane over Highway 50 on Zinfandel Drive. It will also modify highway exit and entrance ramps, make changes to traffic signals, and add bicycle lanes. This project will provide safer passage for bicyclists, pedestrians, and vehicle operators on Zinfandel Driver from Olson Drive to White Rock Road. The current schedule is weekdays during the day, with some night work. Delays are to be expected.
RHMA Overlay ADA Ramps Project
This $45 million project on State Route 99 will upgrade sidewalks and curb ramps, install rumble strips, and improve approximately 70 miles of SR-99 from Sacramento/San Joaquin to Simmerhorn Road in Galt as well as south of Elk Grove Boulevard to MLK, Jr. Boulevard. Auxiliary lanes will also be constructed at certain busy on- and off-ramps. This project is scheduled for completion in November 2021.
Cosumnes Bridges Project
This $166.9 million project will construct two new bridges to replace the Cosumnes River bridge and the Cosumnes River Overflow bridge. The speed limit through the construction zone has been reduced to 55 mph at all hours. The project is scheduled for completion by 2024.
The Moveable Delta Bridges Project
Currently active on State Route 160 along the corridor of the Sacramento Delta, the Moveable Delta Bridges Project is refurbishing and replacing mechanical parts for the Steamboat Slough, Paintersville, and Isleton Bridges, all of which were originally constructed in the early 1920s. They were subsequently refurbished or reconstructed in the early 1950s. The bridges will be intermittently closed through September 2020, but no two bridges will close at the same time.
