Year-Round Activities in Kings Beach
Kings Beach is a great place to shop, dine, and play. At the tip of North Lake Tahoe, the city is centrally located to many restaurants, stores, beaches, and hotels. The beach town is usually packed with locals and visitors who flock to the area year-round. Whether people go there for the sun or the snow, there’s always something to do in Kings Beach.
Fun in the Summer
The town is named after the beach and park. Kings Beach is the flagship beach site in North Lake Tahoe, offering about 700 feet of shoreline. In the summertime, the crystal-clear blue lake is a perfect place for beachgoers to swim, paddleboard, kayak, or go on a parasail ride. You can rent a standup paddle or a kayak along with all the accessories you need for a fun day at the beach. Kings Beach is one of the warmest beaches in Lake Tahoe and is also the only public beach that is dog-friendly.
A few feet from the beach is the scenic lakeside park. Kings Beach State Park features a beautiful playground area where kids can play. It also offers a picnic and barbeque area on a first-come-first-served basis.
Fun in the Winter
During the winter months, many people head out to the Tahoe area to snow ski. While Kings Beach is not the ski haven that other Tahoe towns are known for, it still provides great entertainment in the winter. There are plenty of other activities in Kings Beach that are a combination of indoor and outdoor fun. Some outdoor activities include taking a guided tour around the lake, either by yourself or with a group. You can also layer up and take a boat out to the lake to do some fishing. While it may be a little cold to sunbathe at the beach, many beaches are still open for those who want to take a walk, enjoy a moment of peace, or take in the lake’s beauty.
If you get too cold from all the outdoor activities, you can always head indoors for some spa or yoga sessions. Several places in Kings Beach offer relaxation and healing for your mind, body, and soul.
Hike the Rubicon Trail Year-Round
Hiking the Rubicon Trail is a must! Situated along the southwest shore of Lake Tahoe, it has some of the lake’s best views. It is a hike that most people repeatedly do year-round. The trail covers a lot of grounds. There are many twists and turns along the stunning shoreline cliffs. Along the way, you can see an active eagle nesting area, and lots of trees such as sugar pines, firs, Sierra juniper, Jeffrey pines, and incense cedar. The trail is also home to many exotic wildflowers, including leopard lily, columbine, lupine, yellow monkey-flower, bleeding heart, and nightshade.
You can start the hike from either D.L. Bliss State Park or from Emerald Bay. D.L. Bliss State Park is closed to car traffic for the winter starting mid-October. When the gate is closed, you can park your car at the Visitor’s Center near Highway 89 from sunrise to sunset. From there, it is about a one-mile hike to the Rubicon Trail.
