Accident at El Camino Avenue Happens Due to Medical Problem
A medical issue was reported as the cause of a single-vehicle crash in Sacramento on December 2. The accident was reported around 9:49 in the morning at the intersection of West El Camino Avenue and El Centro Road. The report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said that the vehicle went off the road and crashed into a pole.
Further Information About the Accident
Sac Fire emergency responders were called to the scene where they broke out a window of the vehicle, which was still in drive. It was discovered that the driver had a medical issue that had contributed to the accident. After being assessed by the fire personnel, no further information on the condition of the driver was reported. A tow truck was called to remove the vehicle.
Safety When Driving With a Medical Condition
There are a number of medical conditions that may make it unsafe to drive. However, medications a patient is taking on a doctor’s orders may also endanger the driver and others. Some are when they are taken alone. Others can become a problem if they are combined with other medicines.
It is the responsibility of the physician to warn a patient when their ability to drive may become a medical issue affected by their prescriptions. If the physician or pharmacist does not warn them and they are injured in an accident, they may be liable for damages.
If the patient knows they should not be driving because safety may be compromised by a medical issue, they themselves may be liable if they cause an injury accident. The following medicines and drugs may cause a problem when driving:
- Muscle relaxants
- Sleeping pills
- Pain relievers that are opioid-based
- Antipsychotics
- Anxiety medications such as benzodiazepine
- Medicines that treat diarrhea
- Drugs to treat epilepsy
- Motion sickness pills
- Diet pills
- Products that contain codeine
Other Contributing Causes in an Accident
Other factors may come into play in a single-vehicle collision. In some cases, a defective auto part can contribute to an accident. These may include:
- Defective brakes
- Steering systems
- Wiring
- Wheels or tires
- Accelerator controls
- Transmissions
- Engines
If a defective auto part caused the accident, instead of a medical issue, the manufacturer, distributor, and others may be held responsible. A product liability suit may be filed against those who were responsible for the accident injury. This is why it is so important to retain a vehicle after any accident, so it can be checked for defects.
Aggressive Drivers or Road Rage
Unfortunately, there are many aggressive drivers on the roads these days, and they intentionally cause accidents. This can be through tailgating, which makes the driver in front nervous, crowding another car until it leaves the roadway, and other types of aggression. A lawyer with experience in handling these types of car accidents can investigate to determine what happened to cause the collision.
Examination of Evidence in an Accident
Our injury lawyers check for evidence wherever it may be found to support our client’s injury claim. This includes looking for defects in the auto, checking traffic surveillance cameras for footage of the accident, and checking the police report for mistakes.
They interview the witnesses to the crash, perform accident reconstruction and, in the case of a fleeing driver, look for clues to identify the vehicle that left the scene. Once all the evidence is gathered, our lawyers go to work to build a strong case that supports our client’s injury claim.
