Mendocino County Crash Kills Eureka Man
Two vehicles were traveling along Highway 101 in Mendocino County during the midnight hour of Friday, May 26, 2017. One of the vehicles veered into the opposing lane of travel and collided head-on with another vehicle. Sadly, the collision resulted in two devastating losses.
What Happened?
A 23-year-old Boulder Creek man was driving his Ford Bronco northbound along Highway 101 at about 12:30 am. At the same time, a 44-year-old Eureka man was driving his Dodge Ram pickup southbound along Highway 101. For unknown reasons, the man’s Ford veered over the double yellow lines and crashed head-on with the Dodge.
What Caused the Crash?
The cause of the crash is still under investigation by authorities. A Traffic Collision Report oftentimes takes up to two weeks to be fully processed. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), impaired driving may have played as a factor in the accident.
Injuries Reported
A passing motorist observed the collision, pulled over and assisted the five passengers. The wife and three children of the Eureka man and a family friend were rescued from the burning wreckage. Three of the passengers suffered major injuries as a result of the accident. The passengers were transported via ambulance to the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and the Howard Memorial Hospital.
Unfortunately, the Boulder Creek man and the Eureka man both succumbed to their injuries due to the collision.
Our condolences are with the loved ones of the two men that passed away in this devastating accident.
Head-On Accidents
Head-on accidents take place when two vehicles approaching in opposite directions crash into one another. This type of accident is among the most dangerous type of motor vehicle collision due to the force of impact. The force of impact in these accidents are almost doubled due to the traveling speed by each car. Even if two relatively slow moving vehicles crash into one another at 25 mph, the force of impact may be equal to the force of colliding with a wall at 50 mph.
There are multiple common causes for head-on accidents. Oftentimes, these accidents occur due to drunk driving, reckless driving and texting and driving. Inclement weather conditions may also have an influence on these types of accidents. Victims involved in this type of accident may suffer traumatic or even fatal injuries.
