The mainstay of treatment is rest, ice, and elevation. Once the swelling goes down, physical therapy and rehab can start. This is important for strengthening the muscles of the knee. Because the meniscus cushion is no longer present, the muscles of the knee need to provide extra support. In some cases, this might not be enough.
Surgery for a Tear of the Meniscus
When non-surgical treatment doesn’t control the symptoms, surgery for a meniscus tear can be performed. In this procedure, the fragments and shards of the torn meniscus are either removed (called a meniscectomy), or they are sewn back together (in the case of a partial or incomplete tear). After this, physical therapy must still be completed so that the individual can learn how to walk on the repaired knee. It may be a bit uncomfortable at first, but this will change with time. The typical recovery process following this surgery is about 3 to 6 months.
