Merced County Fiery Crash
I’m Ed Smith, a Merced wrongful death lawyer. Two Delhi men were traveling in a vehicle along the highway outside Delhi on the night of Monday, June 26, 2017. The motorist behind the wheel of the vehicle was allegedly driving the wrong way along the roadway, resulting in a devastating car accident.
What Happened?
A 35-year-old man was driving his 2016 Toyota Camry with a male passenger at approximately 11:30 pm. At the same time, two officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) were monitoring a road project in the area by Caltrans. The two CHP officers noticed the man’s car enter the highway through the wrong traffic lane. The vehicle was traveling northbound along the southbound lanes of Highway 99 for several miles until it collided head-on with a 2017 Toyota Corolla driven by a 30-year-old Winton resident. The impact of the collision caused the Toyota Corolla to overturn. The man’s car continued to veer across both lanes of travel and struck a 2012 Honda Civic driven by a 33-year-old Livingston man. The second collision caused the Toyota Camry to overturn along the west shoulder of the off-ramp for Shanks Road and catch fire. CHP officers arrived at the scene to assist the two victims inside the Toyota Camry that caught fire. Unfortunately, CHP officers were able to rescue only one occupant from the burning vehicle.
Was Anybody Injured?
The Livingston man driving the 2012 Honda Civic suffered minor injuries and received treatment at the scene of the collision. The 30-year-old Winton resident driving the 2017 Toyota Corolla suffered traumatic injuries and was taken to the Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. The driver of the Toyota Camry suffered major internal injuries and was also treated at the Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. The passenger of the Toyota Camry was unable to be rescued by authorities due to the fire spreading too quickly in the vehicle. Sadly, the passenger succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
Our deepest sympathies are with the loved ones of the victim that passed away in this tragic crash.
What Caused the Crash?
The exact cause of the car accident has not yet been released. It generally takes authorities up to two weeks to process a Traffic Collision Report. However, CHP Officer Eric Zuniga revealed that the driver of the Toyota Camry allegedly admitted to consuming alcohol before the collision. The driver was booked on felony driving under the influence causing death and may face more charges as the investigation continues. Traffic reports can sometimes be in error or inconclusive when determining fault. It is critical, especially when a victim has passed away, to contact an experienced accident lawyer who can conduct their own investigation of the crash scene and study the sequence of events leading up to the accident to pinpoint cause. If someone is determined to be negligent, the accident lawyer can help you recover compensation for personal injuries or wrongful death of your loved one.
