Mercedes Benz SUV Recalls

The German automaker, Mercedes-Benz, is known for its combination of luxury with performance vehicles. A recent recall has been made for the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) line of Mercedes-Benz for defects in the airbags, axle bolts and brakes.

Why?

The airbag recall was issued by Mercedes-Benz for the Occupant Classification System (OCS) for the front passenger seat. This system may not recognize if a child or adult is sitting in the seat during travel. This can lead to the possible deactivation of the passenger airbag and may not deploy in an automobile accident.

Mercedes-Benz also announced the recall for the axle bolts on the front and rear axle carriers in its SUV line. The reason being is that these systems may have not been assembled correctly during manufacturing. This may possibly result in fractured bolts. Regardless of the location of fractured bolts, they may affect a motorist’s ability to keep the vehicle stable during drives.

The other area of concern for this recall is the braking system of these vehicles. According to Mercedes-Benz, the fitting of these vehicles may break where the vacuum lines connect with the brake boosters. This may result in a busted fitting where a motorist may have to apply more force to the brake pedal to stop the vehicle.

Which SUVs?

The vehicles that are in the recall were manufactured from April 23, 2014 to May 10, 2016. The following SUVs are apart of the recent Mercedes-Benz recall:

  • 2016: GLE 300d 4Matic, GLE 350, GLE 350d 4Matic, GLE 400 4Matic, GLE 550e 4Matic, GLE 63 AMG, GLE 63 AMG 4Matic and GLE 63S AMG 4Matic
  • 2016-2017 GL-Class: GL 350 4Matic Bluetec and GL 550 4Matic
  • 2016-2017 GLE-Class: GLE 350 4Matic, GLE 43 AMG and GLE 450 4Matic
  • 2017: GLS 63 AMG

When?

The recall was expected to initiate soon. Dealers will update the Occupant Classification System (OCS) software for the airbag systems of these vehicles in the recall. The axle bolt and brake system defects will also be fixed at no cost by Mercedes-Benz for its consumers. If you are an owner of a vehicle in this recall, you may contact the Mercedes-Benz Customer Service number at (800) 367-6372 for additional details.
