Minor Killed in Rancho Cordova Crosswalk Accident
I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Wrongful Death Lawyer. An accident between a motor vehicle and pedestrian on June 13 in Rancho Cordova claimed the life of a young pedestrian while she was walking to school. Therefore, the road where the accident happened was closed and motorists asked to use different routes. An investigation into the cause of the accident is being conducted by local police.
My heart and my prayers go out to the family and friends in this tragedy in their time of sorrow.
Accident Location
The pedestrian accident happened at the intersection of El Manto Drive and Coloma Road shortly after 6:30 in the morning when Leah Callison, aged 12, was walking with her 15-year-old male friend to attend summer school at Cordova High School. According to the young man’s grandmother, her grandson always accompanied Leah to summer school, and they always obeyed traffic signs and walked across the street using the crosswalk.
What Happened?
On this tragic occasion, the grandson told his grandmother that they had checked carefully for oncoming traffic and waited for the walk light to turn before starting across the crosswalk. While they were crossing, the young girl was struck by a Honda Accord. The young man who was crossing the street with the girl was uninjured. A family friend said the girl was thrown 10 to 15 feet by the impact of the vehicle. The grandmother, in her statement to the press, commented that speeding was common in the area and that local residents had to be careful.
Aftermath of the Accident
A local citizen reportedly attended to the girl until emergency personnel arrived from the Sacramento Fire Department, who transported the accident victim to the hospital. Her identity was confirmed by the Coroner’s Office for Sacramento County. No further information about the identity of the female driver of the vehicle has been released at the time of this reporting. However, she did stay at the scene of the accident and responded to police questions about what happened.
The Main Reasons for Motor Vehicle Accidents in Crosswalks
Speeding is one of the major causes of traffic accidents, along with distracted driving, drunk driving and other types of reckless driving, such as making illegal turns or disobeying other traffic laws. Pedestrian injuries can be severe, and when death occurs as a result of extreme negligence, the family of the person who was killed may file for wrongful death to recover damages. While it won’t bring back a loved one, it will cover the financial aspect of the loss.
