The Miraculous, Restorative Effects of Vitamin C
Vitamin C is, without a doubt, one of the most essential nutrients for physical health. In recent decades, vitamin C has become widely popular for its miraculous effects as an immunity booster to prevent coming down with the flu as well as the common cold. It has been used as a homeopathic remedy for viral infections, chronic and life-threatening diseases, and even some forms of wound healing. With all of this in mind, you still may be shocked to learn that vitamin C can be used to alleviate pain.
How Vitamin C May Help with Pain
A research review published in 2017 that assessed vitamin C and its treatment for pain reported that there are multiple physical stressors – trauma, viral illness, surgery and cancer – that can deplete our body’s vitamin C levels, which can cause the development of pain as well as increases in pain. In controlled studies consisting of healthy individuals and those with numerous pain conditions, lower levels of vitamin C were found in participants with pain conditions, such as arthritis, back and neck pain, cancer pain, and more. The same review mentioned that the administration of a large dose of vitamin C had a significant reduction in pain across all conditions. It can even be used to control bone cancer pain, as it aids in the production of collagen.
Vitamin C is most commonly orally administered but can be intravenously administered if necessary. The exact mechanisms for how vitamin C helps reduce pain are not fully understood. We do know that it is a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, but its health benefits may surpass that. Vitamin C has been shown to be involved in the synthesis of multiple neurotransmitters that affect our pain control.
Could Vitamin C be Effective for Treating COVID-19?
The Chinese government has reviewed and approved multiple studies of intravenous administration of vitamin C as a COVID-19 treatment course. Their standard dosage rate is 6,000 mg per day and 12,000 mg per day for moderate and severe cases. Due to the promising early reports from China, there is one large New York hospital that is following in China’s footsteps with administering high doses of vitamin C in conjunction with other antiviral treatments. Studies have demonstrated that high doses of vitamin C increase the proliferation and activation of immune cells, such as neutrophils, microphages, B lymphocytes, and T lymphocytes.
In controversy, there have been alleged reports of the World Health Organization (WHO) has been in correspondence with big-name companies such as Facebook, Google, Amazon, and others to stop the spread of misinformation related to COVID-19, including vitamin C as one of the examples. There have also been reports of censorship on Facebook and Youtube of holistic physicians that have advocated vitamin C treatment.
