Missing Man Discovered Dead After Lake Tahoe Boating Accident
On Thursday, August 27, 2020, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office located a man who went missing earlier in the week after a boating accident on Lake Tahoe. Tragically, the individual was discovered deceased. Officials reported that the decedent was a 25-year-old resident of Gilroy.
Accident Information
According to police, the young man and two other individuals had rented a day-use boat from the Tahoe Keys Marina on Tuesday, August 25, 2020. The group drove the boat to the area of Lilly Beach sometime in the late afternoon. The three were swimming when strong winds and currents suddenly moved their boat away from them. While two of the three were rescued by local officials, the third man reportedly went under the water and was not seen again.
Search Operation
After the missing individual was reported, a search and rescue operation was launched. Agencies assisting with the operation included the U.S. Coast Guard, the El Dorado and Douglas County Sheriff’s Offices, Tahoe Douglas Fire, CalStar medical helicopter, and South Tahoe Fire and Rescue.
Responders reportedly searched for the missing man until sunset before calling in a Navy and Coast Guard rescue helicopter from the Fallon Naval Base. The helicopter continued the search throughout the night unsuccessfully. The decedent was finally located at about 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Boating Accidents and Non-Boater Factors
Boating accidents like this one can happen for a number of reasons, many of which boaters are unable to control. In many cases, an issue with the boat or its safety equipment causes an unexpected emergency, leading to tragic consequences. In others, inadequate warning about dangerous water conditions may have contributed to causing the accident.
Wrongful Death Damages
After learning that a friend or family member passed away unexpectedly, people often feel shocked or overwhelmed. In many cases, family members or dependents worry about how they will be able to live their lives without the support and love of the decedent. Issues like lost income and/or services, as well as funeral costs and other damages, can prevent families from focusing on spending time together and mourning their loss.
While it’s impossible to truly replace what you have lost, many families can claim compensation for their damages after fatal accidents by filing wrongful death claims. By holding insurance companies and at-fault entities financially liable, it’s possible for families to obtain payments to cover their losses, including economic and personal damages.
However, every case is different and liable parties may try to disclaim liability. To ensure that your family receives the payments they deserve, it is important to speak with a trusted attorney in your area who has experience handling similar cases.
