Mitsubishi Lancer Air Bag Recall
I’m Ed Smith, a Fresno car accident lawyer. Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) has recently announced a recall of some of their older model sedan vehicles. The reason for the recall stems from a safety issue in certain air bags of these vehicles.
Recall Details
Mitsubishi has issued a recall for approximately 66,001 vehicles equipped with a passenger side frontal air bag. The inflators of these air bags may rupture over time due to potential moisture intrusion, increasing the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants.
Which Vehicles?
The following vehicles are affected by the air bag recall:
- 2004 Lancer Sportback
- 2004 to 2006 Lancer and Lancer Evolution
Recall Remedy
Owners will be notified by Mitsubishi if their vehicle is affected by the recall. Owners may take their vehicles to be serviced at their nearest dealer. The front passenger air bag inflator will be replaced with a different inflator by dealers, at no charge. Owners may contact the Mitsubishi customer service line at (888) 648-7820 for more information.
Takata Corporation Bankruptcy
The air bag company, Takata Corporation, has been listed as one of the largest recalls in history. The company has been recently driven into bankruptcy due to a product liability issue revealed in multiple motor vehicle accidents. The liabilities this company is expected to compensate is estimated to be as high as $50 billion dollars. Due to this estimation, the company has already filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the United States. The company headquarters, located in Japan, has also filed for bankruptcy.
Types of Air Bag Injuries
Air bags are designed to deploy in the event of a motor vehicle collision. These devices are intended to prevent serious injury to vehicle occupants. Air bags have improved throughout the due course of years due to technological advances. However, they have the potential to cause injuries as well. Some injuries are the result of an air bag failure, while others were caused by the explosive outburst of the bag due to a defective air bag inflator.
The most common injuries resulting from air bag deployment include head injuries, eye injuries, hearing loss and abrasions of the skin. Additional injuries caused by air bags include facial lacerations, fractured ribs, broken fingers, arm fractures, and nose fractures. Sometimes, skin burns can result due to the heat exerted from an exploded air bag. Most burns occur on the face, chest and arms and are commonly diagnosed as second degree. Fatal injuries from air bags have been noted particularly in elderly people, short people and young children. For more details, contact an experienced Fresno personal injury lawyer.
