A truck accident involving four vehicles near Modesto left two parties injured on the morning of March 4, 2019. The incident occurred around 4:00 in the morning along the northbound lanes of Highway 99. A pickup truck hauling a trailer carrying two race cars reportedly failed to slow down in time upon approaching a construction zone. The pickup rear-ended a slowed milk truck and collided with two other vehicles. The impact of the collision caused the pickup to veer onto the right shoulder and erupt in flames. The motorist of the milk truck sustained minor injuries in the crash, according to authorities. The pickup truck driver, identified as a part-time driver for NASCAR’s Camping World Truck Series, suffered a possible femur fracture and a broken arm. Officials have not yet released an update regarding the conditions of those injured.
Crash Investigation
The truck accident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). However, officials believe drowsy driving may have contributed to the collision.
Common Injuries in a Truck Accident
Accidents involving large trucks can be far more devastating than an automobile accident. These collisions are likely to cause serious injury due to the overwhelming size, weight, and momentum of the big rig. Injuries that are commonly suffered in these types of crashes include bone fractures, cervical sprain, nerve damage, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and wrongful death in some extreme cases. If the accident was caused by the negligence of the trucker or trucking company, a claim may be filed against those parties for resultant damages. Common Reasons for Truck Accidents
Truck accidents are often caused by driver error on the part of the trucker and trucking company. These include:
- Brake Failure: Truck accidents involving brake failure often result in catastrophic consequences. These types of collisions can be avoided in most cases by ensuring the brakes of the truck are properly installed and maintained. Truckers are also required to receive training on how to perform regular brake inspections.
- Distracted Driving: A distraction is considered any task that diverts the attention of a truck driver away from the roadway. These can include texting or calling on a cell phone, eating or drinking, and adjusting the GPS. Since it takes a large truck much longer to come to a complete stop than a passenger vehicle, it is essential for a trucker’s focus to stay on the road.
- Fatigued Driving: Conscientious truckers are often pressured by trucking companies to make unrealistic transporting deadlines. This serves as an attempt for the company to maximize profits. However, this can increase the chances of a truck driver making poor decisions. This is especially true if they log too many hours behind the wheel without proper rest.
- Reckless Driving and Speeding: A trucker that drives too fast for roadway conditions or above the posted speed limit can put the lives of others on the road in danger. Many truck accidents are caused by a trucker speeding along with following other vehicles too closely and unsafe lane changes.
How a Truck Accident Attorney Can Help
Determining liability in a truck accident can be complex. These collisions often involve multiple parties including the trucker, the trucking company, the contractor, insurance companies, or the manufacturer of the truck. These parties often go through great lengths to pinpoint responsibility away from themselves following a crash. For this reason, it is essential to seek guidance from an experienced Modesto truck accident attorney. An experienced attorney can investigate further into the truck accident to properly determine fault and identify all responsible parties. This way, the attorney can obtain fair compensation for damages suffered by the injured party or their family.
