I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto car accident lawyer. A two-vehicle collision took place in central Modesto on the evening of Wednesday, November 29, 2017. The crash, unfortunately, claimed the lives of two parties.
Our thoughts and condolences are with those affected by the loss of their loved ones in this senseless tragedy.
What Happened?
Two parties were traveling in a Ford Escape SUV southbound along Tully Road in the vicinity of Rumble Road at approximately 8:30 pm. The driver of the Ford was attempting to turn left onto Rumble Road when it was struck by a northbound Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan. The impact of the collision caused the Ford to overturn and come to a rest in front of a home located along the east side of Tully Road.

The following video demonstrates the scene of the horrific vehicle collision. As you will notice in this video, both vehicles sustained serious body damage as a result of the collision.
Nature of Injuries
Emergency responders were called to the scene of the car accident. Crews located the two parties trapped inside the Ford Escape and performed extrication measures to free them from the wreckage. One of the parties was, sadly, pronounced deceased at the scene. The other party was transported to an area hospital for injury treatment. Unfortunately, that injured party also passed away while at the hospital.
Identity of Victims
The victims of the fatal car accident were identified as a mother and daughter, 54-year-old Sherri Cooley and 21-year-old Megan Cooley, both of Modesto.
What Caused the Accident?
The exact cause of the car accident has not yet been released by the Modesto Police Department. Officials require one to two weeks to conduct an investigation and process a Traffic Collision Report. Authorities reported that the 16-year-old motorist of the Mercedes-Benz sedan, was arrested and charged with two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while under the influence. The juvenile may face more charges as the investigation continues.
Speeding and Accidents
The consequences of speeding while driving are endless. While most drivers are aware of the risks of driving above the posted speed limit, others continue to engage in this reckless driving habit. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), approximately 35,092 parties were killed in motor vehicle accidents in 2015 alone. The leading causes of these accidents consisted of speeding, drunk driving and other motorist behaviors. It is important to monitor your speed, especially while driving in inclement conditions, as it may increase your risk of an automobile accident. The aftermath of such accidents may be traumatic, catastrophic or fatal. It is important to contact a seasoned Car Accident Lawyer in Modesto to protect your rights in a car accident case.
Loved Ones Forever Remembered
Sherri Cooley and Megan Cooley were deeply adored by their family. Sherri and Megan both lived life to the fullest with their kind, loving souls. The mother-daughter duo kept close ties with everyone that surrounded them. It is unfathomable that the irresponsibility and negligence of one party has completely changed the lives of those who held Sherri and Megan close to their hearts. A GoFundMe account has been created by the loved ones of the mother and daughter to cover the expenses of their unforeseen passing.
