Authorities Investigate Social Media Video in Modesto Fatal Crash
I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto car accident lawyer. A fatal car accident claimed the lives of an innocent mother and daughter during the nighttime hours of November 29, 2017. The party that allegedly caused the collision is now under fire by social media and authorities for an unfathomable video that they uploaded online. According to officials, the video depicts little remorse for the mother and daughter that passed away in this tragic, heart-wrenching accident.
We would like to send our thoughts and prayers to the friends and family affected by the loss of their two loved ones in this senseless car accident.
Accident Details
Sherri Cooley, a 54-year-old mother and her 21-year-old daughter, Megan Cooley, were driving together in their Ford Escape SUV southbound along Tully Road near Rumble Road at about 8:30 pm. At the same time, a 16-year-old was driving her 2006 Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan northbound along Tully Road. The Ford was attempting to conduct a left-hand turn onto Rumble Road when the Mercedes-Benz was allegedly approaching the vehicle at a high rate of speed. The Mercedes-Benz was unable to avoid the Ford in its path, resulting in a serious car accident.
Nature of Injuries
The juvenille operator of the Mercedes-Benz and her two young passengers were all transported to area hospitals for injury treatment. One of the occupants of the Ford Escape, Megan Cooley, was taken to a local hospital where she, unfortunately, succumbed to her injuries. The other occupant of the Ford Escape, Sherri Cooley, was pronounced deceased at the scene by police.
Fatal Car Accident Investigation
Authorities reported that the juvenile behind the wheel of the Mercedes-Benz was allegedly driving under the influence and speeding moments before colliding with the Ford. The adolescent has been placed into juvenile custody and has been charged with two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while driving under the influence. It is probable that the juvenile may face additional charges as officials continue their investigation.
Video Details
The Modesto Police Department is investigating a Snapchat video that surfaced on social media two days following the fatal accident. The video appears to show three scenes where the first shows the juvenile motorist and her under-aged passengers in a vehicle; the second of blood on a hand and an IV inserted into a left arm; and the third of an adolescent with oxygen tubes placed in his nose. In the second scene of the video, there is a text box that contains information provided by the juvenile driver. The text of this video revealed that the juvenile driver was thankful that she and her passengers in her vehicle are alive but also allegedly wrote, “my Benz is totaled.” The last portion of this text seems to draw out the idea that the juvenile was more concerned about her vehicle being totaled as a result of the collision rather than the two innocent parties that lost their lives.
Social Media and Car Accidents
It is undeniable that social media is a great way to communicate with your loved ones. However, there are consequences to the actions one takes on social media platforms. Anything a person searches or posts online leaves behind a “digital footprint”, meaning that the evidence of their time online may be discovered and used against them by officials including automobile insurance companies. If you have lost someone you love in an accident involving a distracted driver, contact a wrongful death lawyer as soon as possible.
Loved Ones Devastated by Senseless Accident
The unforeseen passing of Sherri Cooley and Megan Cooley has devastated those who surrounded them. The mother-daughter duo were deeply adored by their family members for their loyal, kind and loving souls. The loved ones of Sherri and Megan have set up a GoFundMe page to cover their funeral expenses.
