Details on the Single-Vehicle Crash That Claimed the life of a Modesto Man
Officials reported that a man was driving a Honda westbound on Woodland Avenue. The Honda driver approached a slight bend in the roadway, lost control, and veered off the roadway. The Honda traveled up a dirt embankment, allegedly crashed into a wooden telephone pole, and came to a rest in a canal.
CHP traffic officers indicated that bystanders heard the traffic collision and found the Honda driver in the water a short distance from his car. The man was pulled from the canal as first responders arrived. Sadly, he was declared dead at the scene of the car accident. Investigators believe the man succumbed to his injuries from the impact of the collision. Further information on the incident was not immediately available.
What are the Common Causes of Solo Car Crashes?
A single-vehicle accident may occur when one car is involved in a traffic collision. Examples of this type of crash may include rollover collisions, crashes with animals or objects in the road, and run-off-road wrecks.
While solo car crashes are often assumed to be the result of driver error, that is not always the case. There may be other parties held liable for such collisions, including a phantom vehicle, the automaker of the vehicle involved, and the government entity in charge of maintaining the public roadway. Who May Be Held Liable for a Single-Vehicle Accident?
A single-vehicle crash involving a phantom car may occur when an unidentified driver makes a sudden stop, abrupt lane change, or other unexpected action that may cause another motorist to act quickly to avoid a crash. This may include braking or veering away from the other vehicle. Such evasive maneuvers may cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles and exit the roadway or strike an object in the road like a barrier or median. In such situations, an injured party or family of a decedent should reach out to an experienced injury lawyer to learn what options they may have for recovery in their situation.
In other cases, a defect in the design or manufacturing of a motor vehicle may either contribute to or cause a single-vehicle crash. This may include faults in the braking system, tires, steering, and more. Conversely, when a solo car crash involves a vehicle overturning, another potential defect may be a fault in the strength of the vehicle roof. When a car fails to meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 216 in such a situation, the automaker may be held liable for losses resulting from the exacerbation of injuries sustained in the incident. Keep in mind that a vehicle suspected of a defect, whether that be due to insufficient roof crush resistance in a rollover collision or another type of fault in the handling of the vehicle, an auto products liability claim may be brought against the manufacturer for damages incurred.
Other factors that may be involved in a solo vehicle crash include unsafe road design or conditions. Defects in the design or insufficient road maintenance may cause or contribute to a traffic collision. Common types of road defects include lack of warning signage, improper roadway markings, sharp curves, curve banking, narrow lanes, potholes, and more.
