Safety Tips for Motorcycle Riders
Riding a motorcycle can be a thrilling experience. However, bikes are more dangerous than your average vehicle due to a lack of safety features and physical protection. Although no one anticipates in being involved in a Modesto serious motorcycle accident, there are some motorcycle safety guidelines to consider when hitting the road. These include:
- Avoid riding in inclement weather conditions: It is best to avoid riding a bike in adverse weather such as wind and rain which can make the road surface slick and dangerous to ride.
- Invest in a bike within your riding skill level: A big decision to consider when you first start riding is deciding what kind of bike suits your experience level and needs. This can be done by identifying your reason for riding. Having a big touring motorcycle may not be wise if you plan on riding on the weekends or commuting to work. Conversely, be sure to invest in a bike that has the anti-lock brake system. This comes with the advantage of more bike control and being able to stop sooner to avoid a motorcycle accident.
- Motorcycle gear: Once you have decided what type of bike suits your lifestyle, you will want to size yourself to find proper motorcycle gear. A helmet is the first most important piece of motorcycle safety equipment you need to wear on the road. Be sure to purchase one that is DOT certified and fits snugly without being too loose or uncomfortably tight. A good motorcycle jacket should be purchased based upon fit and function before design. Proper gloves, pants, and boots are also essential to wear for safety and comfort while riding to avoid debris from striking your body.
- Never ride while under the influence: Alcohol consumption can adversely affect a motorcyclist’s ability to ride safely on the road. Of the motorcycle riders who lost their lives in single-vehicle collisions in 2016, 37 percent were alcohol-impaired, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
- Ride defensively: This is important in ensuring your safety as a motorcyclist on the road. This can be done by constantly scanning for debris in the roadway and being prepared to take evasive action to avoid or mitigate a crash.
- Take a riding course: It can be overwhelming to master the flow of traffic and bike controls when you first start taking to the roads with your motorcycle. It is recommended to take a motorcycle course to sharpen your skills before you start riding.
Motorcycle Accident Injuries
Injuries from motorcycle accidents are often traumatic. They range from bone fractures and road rash to traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord damage. Some crashes can leave motorcyclists paralyzed or with other types of permanent disability. As with any motorcycle accident injury, this can create financial concerns for the biker and their family. This is especially true for those permanently disabled in motorcycle collisions as they are often left with mounting medical expenses and an inability to earn wages.
