Motorcycle Crash on I-80 in Sacramento
I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento personal injury lawyer. On Thursday, June 8, a motorcycle crash happened along Interstate 80 in Sacramento when it was struck by a motor vehicle. The California Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation to determine the cause and liability in the accident.
What Happened
The motorcycle accident occurred about 5:00 in the morning when a BMW, described as silver in color, collided with the motorcycle on the highway past the exit for Madison Avenue. Further details regarding the accident are still sketchy at the time of this report. However, paramedics and an ambulance arrived at the accident scene. No report has been released yet concerning the medical condition of any victims of the crash. One of the lanes along Interstate 80 was shut down while the CHP investigated and cleared debris left by the crash.
Motorcycle Crash Statistics
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that motorcycle crashes were the cause of 4,976 deaths in 2015, along with 88,000 injuries. Per miles traveled by a vehicle, motorcycle riders are about 29 times more apt to die in a crash and face injuries at a rate five times that of other modes of transportation. The number of motorcycles on the road in 2015 was 8.6 million, so it isn’t surprising that motorcyclists compose 14 percent of the traffic fatalities nationwide. Forty percent of those who died in crashes were not using a helmet at the time.
California Motorcycle Crashes
The city of Sacramento showed 136 injuries and deaths from motorcycle crashes in 2014 out of a total of 3,670. This was out of a county-wide total of 421 motorcycle deaths and injuries from an accident. The county-wide total of injuries and deaths reported in accidents was 9,747. As a Sacramento wrongful death lawyer, I’ve helped many families who have lost someone they love in a motorcycle crash due to the negligence of another motorist.
Injuries Caused by Motorcycle Crashes
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 30 percent of motorcyclists suffer injuries to the lower extremities. This is followed by injuries to the head and neck at 22 percent. These injuries are followed closely by injuries to the shoulders, back and chest trauma. However, the most severe injuries were head and brain injuries, the incidence of which could be reduced by wearing a safety helmet. Although wearing a helmet doesn’t always prevent a head injury, it does significantly reduce the odds. Our injury lawyers have decades of experience helping motorcyclists recover compensation for their damages caused by a negligent motorist.
