Motorcycle Helmets Blend Safety, Tech, and Style

Choosing the Right Motorcycle Helmet

Motorcycle helmet design has remained mostly unchanged for the last 60 years, but a new startup is hoping to change that.

Integrated Technology

The CrossHelmet, produced by the Japanese design studio Borderless, incorporates many of the modern tech amenities that automobile drivers take for granted. The new helmet features a heads-up display, cameras, communications systems, and sound control (noise reduction) run by an onboard computer. These tools will increase the rider’s ability to access ride data and make use of applications like GPS navigation and weather reports. The cameras- both rear and forward-facing- allow for a nearly 360° field of view, a substantial improvement over traditional helmet designs.

Safety & Comfort

In addition to maximizing functionality, the new helmet offers a more comfortable riding experience for users. The design of the CrossHelmet is slimmer than most traditional helmets and puts less pressure on the head when worn. The spacious interior gives the wearer a wider field of view and more breathing room. The designers believe that these new features will help riders to better judge traffic conditions and enable safer decisions.

Preventing Head Injuries

Wearing a helmet is one of the most effective ways of reducing the risk of serious injury in the event of a motorcycle crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports motorcyclists are 16 times more likely to suffer fatal injuries in a crash than occupants of passenger vehicles. Motorcycle accidents are also four times more likely to result in traumatic injuries. Injuries to the head and brain are the leading causes of disability or fatality in motorcycle crashes. These kinds of injuries can include brain trauma like concussions, or more catastrophic injuries that can require expensive long-term care.
