Pickup and Motorcycle Collide in Major Injury Accident Near Elk Grove
A motorcycle rider suffered a major injury and sadly passed away after a collision with a pickup truck in rural Sacramento County on July 7. The collision occurred around 8:23 p.m. at the intersection of Grant Line and Calvine roads. The incident report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that there were two occupants riding on the motorcycle along Grant Line Road near Elk Grove when they collided with a Toyota Tacoma pickup.
Fault to Be Determined in Motorcycle Accident
Both the motorcyclist and their passenger ended up on the ground following the crash. Sacramento Fire Department emergency responders determined that at least one of the riders had suffered a major injury and passed away at a local hospital. The roadway was blocked for an indeterminate amount of time as police and emergency responders handled the situation. The driver of the pickup remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities in the investigation.
Accidents Can Cause Serious Trauma to a Motorcycle Rider
Motorcycle riders often experience severe trauma or die in an accident when it is caused by a negligent motorist. So do motorcycle passengers. Their basic lack of protection makes them vulnerable, especially if the bike lands on them or they are ejected. Over the years, my law firm has helped many injured motorcycle riders in getting the compensation that they deserve following an accident injury. Major reasons a motorcycle rider is injured by another motorist include:
- Changing lanes: A motorist who changes lanes without looking for a motorcycle rider coming up beside them can cause a serious injury accident.
- Turning left in front of a motorcycle rider: This is the most common cause of a passenger vehicle collision with a motorcycle. Often, the driver says they never saw the motorcyclist.
- Lane splitting: Although lane-splitting by motorcyclists is legal in California, that doesn’t mean other drivers will look out for them. The problem is compounded by the lack of room the motorcycle rider has for maneuverability if they suddenly find themselves about to be hit by another driver.
- Road hazards: Road hazards that can lead to a motorcycle rider being injured can include potholes, debris or oil slicks, upheavals in the pavement, and others. When lack of proper roadway maintenance is the cause of an accident, the government entity in charge can be held liable. Because the time limit to file a government claim is much shorter than other personal injuries, enlisting the assistance of an injury attorney can be a good idea. In that way, the paperwork will be filed within the deadline.
- Speeding: Speeding by a motorist makes it less likely they will be able to stop if an emergency occurs.
- Drunk drivers: Drivers who are drunk or on drugs are a danger to everyone.
