Motorcycle and Two Vehicle Collision on State Route 154
I’m Ed Smith, a Santa Barbara car accident lawyer. A multiple vehicle crash along California State Route 154 on July 5 caused serious injuries to a minimum of one individual as a result. The cause of the crash is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol.
What Happened
The crash occurred in the area near Cachuma Lake Recreation Area close to the exit for Lakeview Drive shortly before 2:00 in the afternoon when two vehicles and a motorcycle were involved in a collision. Initially, the CHP reported that the accident had been between a motor vehicle and pedestrian but made a correction to the report. The only information on the vehicles involved in the accident is that one was a jeep SUV that was white in color.
Causes of Motorcycle Accidents
Everyone knows that a motorcycle rider is less protected than the driver of a motor vehicle, or at least they should know. Motorcycle accident injuries are five times higher than those in motor vehicles, and motorcyclists are 27 times more apt to die in a crash. While there are things a motorcycle rider can do to increase his/her protection, such as wearing protective clothing and a helmet, obeying traffic laws and not riding a bike after drinking, knowing the most common reasons for motorcycle accidents can help the driver of a motor vehicle become more proactive to avoid accidents.
- Signal before turning or changing lanes.
- Double check the blind spot before changing lanes because motorcycles can be more difficult to spot.
- Sudden stops are a danger to motorcyclists. Keep your motor vehicle a safe distance behind other vehicles to avoid those sudden stops.
- Use caution when opening a car door to ensure a motorcycle rider is not approaching.
- Obey laws such as speed limits, using signals and avoiding distractions such as texting.
- Remember that lane splitting is legal in California, so watch accordingly.
How a Lawyer Helps the Victim of a Personal Injury
Whether an individual is injured in a motor vehicle, motorcycle or other type of accident that was caused by negligence, an experienced injury lawyer helps in numerous ways. An injury lawyer will negotiate with insurance companies. He or she will go to the accident scene to conduct his/her own investigation, and gather all the evidence in the case. This includes accident reconstruction, interviewing witnesses and determining if the police report is correct because it may not be. The lawyer’s job is to prove that the injuries an accident victim suffered were directly caused by the accident itself.
Damages an Injury Victim Can Recover
- Loss of earnings and future earnings
- Medical costs that are associated with the accident, which includes any future medical costs associated with the accident injury
- Pain and suffering such as emotional trauma, nightmares, anxiety and pain caused by the accident
- Loss of consortium refers to the damage the accident has caused to a relationship with a spouse.
- Extra expenses related to the accident such as the cost of medications or gasoline to get to and from the doctor
- Household replacement expenses or at-home nursing care
